Crisis of Identity in the Novels of Milan Kundera

Abstract:

At the beginning, this thesis focuses on the phenomenon “crisis of human identity” as a widespread sociological-philosophical problem of nowadays. However, its main aim is reflection of this problem in contemporary literature, especially in the works of Milan Kundera. His novels, which deal mainly with human existence, don’t leave this phenomenon without noticing. With the help of the analysis of typical Kundera’s topics, the thesis describes how the identity crisis reveals itself in his novels. The first part of the thesis concentrates on “dualism of body and soul”; the second part pays particular attention to “our image in the eyes of others.” Both mentioned topics are closely connected with the crisis of identity as well as the topic “kitsch” which the thesis deals with at the end. Omnipresent kitsch influencing current society could be perceived as one of the primary causes of identity crises, at the least in Kundera’s novels.

Abstract:

V úvodu práce nahlíží jev „krize lidské identity“ jakožto rozšířený sociologicko-filozofický problém dnešní doby. Jejím hlavním záměrem je však odraz tohoto problému v současné literatuře, konkrétně v románech Milana Kundery. Jeho romány, zabývající se zpravidla lidskou existencí, nenechávají tento jev bez povšimnutí. Práce popisuje, jak se krize identity v Kunderových románech projevuje. Jako nástroj si bere analýzu typických „kunderovských“ témat, která s krizí lidské identity úzce souvisí : „dualismus těla a duše“ (1. část) a „náš obraz v očích ostatních“ (2. část). V závěru se práce zamýšlí nad tématem „kýče,“ které rovněž často figuruje v Kunderově díle a je spjato s krizí identity. Všudypřítomný kýč, ovlivňující současnou společnost, je možné vnímat jako jednu z prvotních příčin krize identity, alespoň v rámci Kunderových románů.
