The conflict between pupil and teacher in the german-speeking literature ( on the example of the novel Jugend ohne Gott by Ödön von Horváth)

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the conflict between a teacher and a student, using Ödön von Horváth's novel Jugend ohne Gott as an example. Firstly, works by German authors relevant to this topic will be introduced, pinpointing the differences between these pieces. What follows is Horváth's biography and outline of his works with political setting of his period. Second part comprises an analysis of the novel with a focus placed on the teacher-student conflict. What is studied are the reasons of conflict and their consequences. The aim is to grasp the behaviour of the participants in a conflict and to capture the metamorphosis of the passive teacher into an active opponent of fascist ideology, deception and injustice. The author tries to answer the question of what influences and deforms students' morale and which way conflicts are solved. Also, the question will be raised as to what extent religion may help solve conflicts.

Abstract:

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Lehrer-Schüler Konflikt am Beispiel des Romans Jugend ohne Gott von Ödön von Horváth. Zuerst wird überblickend dargelegt, welche Autoren der deutschsprachigen Literatur dieses Thema behandeln und wodurch sich ihre Bearbeitungen des Stoffes unterscheiden. Dann werden das Leben und das Schaffen von Horváth samt der politischen Situation seiner Zeit präsentiert. Im zweiten Teil wird Horváths literarische Bearbeitung des Lehrer-Schüler Konflikts analysiert, wobei die Ursachen und die Konsequenzen der Konfliktsituationen untersucht werden. Die Analyse versucht zu erklären, wie sich die einzelnen Akteuren in den Konfliktsituationen verhalten, wie sich der passive Lehrer zum aktiven Widerstand gegen faschistische Ideologie, Lüge und Ungerechtigkeit entwickelt und was die Moral der Schüler beeinflusst und deformiert. Zuletzt wird erörtert, welche Konfliktlösung dargestellt wird und inwieweit die Religion zur Konfliktlösung beitragen kann.
