Abstract:

Disertační práce identifikuje pozornost investora na kapitálových trzích v kontextu několika ekonomických oblastí. Behaviorální finance mohou sloužit jako nástroj k objasnění reakcí na kapitálových trzích spolu s všeobecně používanými fundamentálními faktory. Behaviorální složku reprezentuje index intenzity vyhledávání z aplikace Google Trends a počet článků na vybrané téma čerpaných z největších amerických novin. Pozornost investora představuje rozhodnutí investora na základě sběru informací následované chováním při výběru informací. Nicméně zachycení konkrétní intuice investora reprezentované vyhledáváním klíčových slov na internetu může být obtížné. Vzhledem k danému faktu jsou v práci definovány principy pro zpracování a sběr dat o pozornosti investora. Výsledky práce prokazují, že pozornost investora má vliv na výnosnost akcií, a to i v případě vyhledávání jiných informací než obchodního symbolu společnosti či názvu společnosti. Konkrétně, pozornost investora má pozitivní vliv na výnosnost akcií, avšak negativní události mohou změnit sentiment investora. Zjištění mohou být využita ke krátkodobým predikcím výnosnosti akcií se zaměřením na investiční strategie pro konkrétní sektory. Závěry disertační práce slouží k prokázání významnosti behaviorálních proměnných v oblasti výnosnosti akcií, a to současně za použití fundamentálních faktorů.

Abstract:

This thesis identifies behavioural attention on stock returns in relation to several economic issues. Alongside widely known fundamental indicators, behavioural finance could serve as the missing link explaining the reactions of the capital market. In this study, the behavioural component is measured using the search volume index (SVI) taken from Google Trends and the number of specific articles that feature in the most prominent US journals. More precisely, it is assumed that behavioural attention results in actions that emphasise the importance of information, followed by information selection behaviour. However, correctly interpreting the information measuring investor behaviour can be tricky. Thus, this study focuses on behavioural attention and defines the principles regarding the collection, processing and transformation of the information that influences it. The findings prove that not only searches for companies’ names or ticker symbols but also searches for other company-related information are associated with changes in stock returns. According to the analysis, stock returns are positively influenced by behavioural attention. However, even though the general relationship between attention and stock returns was found to be positive, negative events can change user sentiment. These implications could serve in short-term predictions of stock return changes, with a potential emphasis on sector investment strategies. Most importantly, this thesis contains a promising new data analysis based on a mix of fundamentals and search data.
