The quality of mother-child interaction in single-parent and two-parent families

Abstract:

The focus of this work is the interaction of mother and child with the connection to the father’s engagement in the family. An observational instrument INTAKT was chosen to conduct microanalysis of the dyads. The instrument was developed in Austria for analyzing the quality of interaction of a relationship from video footages. This interaction is coded and further analyzed. In the coding system used in this work, all three dimensions of INTAKT are used and labeled as follows: Maternal Sensitivity, Maternal Feedback and Joint Attention. Instrument INTAKT was used in computer system INTERACT. Out of many factors that influence mother-child interaction, a factor “family where the child grows up” was further studied due to the increasing number of single parent’s households. An absence of a parent in the family changes the structure of the family as well as the socio-economical situation and according to the results of this work; it also may have an impact on mother-child interaction. In a sample of 16 mothers and their children, the differences in all of the three coded dimensions were observed. On the seven-point scale for assessing Maternal sensitivity it was confirmed that mothers from two-parent families are in average one point more sensitive than mothers from single-parent families. The dimension Maternal Feedback shows more negative feedback from the mothers without a partner. Additionally, in the same group of mothers there is also tendency to manipulate the attention of a child during the activity. The results of this work may suggest that the absence of a father could have an influence on mother’s behavior in interaction with a child.

Abstract:

V práci sa zameriavame na interakciu medzi matkou a dieťaťom so zámerom preskúmať jej kvalitu v závislosti na prítomnosti otca dieťaťa v rodine. Pre mikroanalýzu interakčných dyád sme zvolili pozorovací systém INTAKT, ktorý bol v Rakúsku vyvinutý za účelom pozorovania kvality interakcie za pomoci videonahrávky a následného kódovania typov správania. V kódovacom systéme sme použili všetky tri dimenzie INTAKT-u, ktorými sú: Senzitivita matky, Spätná väzba matky a Zdieľaná pozornosť pri aktivite. INTAKT bol aplikovaný v počítačovom programe INTERACT, v ktorom boli jednotlivo zaznamenávané typy správania matky. Z mnohých faktorov, ktoré na kvalitu interakcie vplývajú sme vybrali typ rodiny, v ktorej dieťa vyrastá, vzhľadom na aktuálnu tému vysokého počtu slobodných matiek v našej spoločnosti. Absencia otca v domácnosti spôsobuje zmeny nie len v štruktúre rodiny ale aj v socioekonomickej situácii, a má podľa našich výsledkov dopad na interakciu matky a dieťaťa. Vo vzorke 16 matiek s deťmi sa ukázali rozdiely vo všetkých troch pozorovaných dimenziách. Na sedem stupňovej škále senzitivity sa matky z úplných rodín ukazujú v priemere o stupeň senzitívnejšie ako matky z neúplných rodín. V dimenzií Spätná väzba výsledky ukazujú na viac negatívnej spätnej väzby u matiek, kde v domácnosti absentuje otec a v Zdieľanej pozornosti môžeme u tejto skupiny vidieť tendenciu k usmerňovaniu pozornosti dieťaťa. Výsledky práce môžu naznačovať, že absencia otca má vplyv na správanie matky v interakcii s dieťaťom.
