Identification and typing of environmental strains of the genus Enterococcus

Abstract:

Zástupci rodu Enterococcus jsou významným humánním infekčním agens. Velká část studií zabývajících se tímto rodem je proto zaměřena především na klinicky významné druhy a kmeny. Výrazně menší pozornost je však věnována kmenům enterokoků vyskytujícím se v prostředí (ve vodě, v půdě, na povrchu rostlin), které jsou ve srovnání s kmeny klinického původu fenotypově variabilnější a druhově bohatší skupinou. Cílem této diplomové práce byla izolace a identifikace kmenů enterokoků z rostlinného materiálu. Doposud bylo publikováno pouze několik málo prací zabývajících se touto tématikou, přičemž většina těchto studií byla publikována před více než deseti lety a neodráží tak četné změny, které v posledním desetiletí proběhly v rámci taxonomie rodu Enterococcus. Výsledky této diplomové práce by měly přinést nové poznatky o druhové i vnitrodruhové variabilitě, o sezónních výkyvech kolonizace povrchu rostlin zástupci tohoto bakteriálního rodu, a rozšířit tak s ohledem na aktuální taxonomické změny základní znalosti o výskytu enterokoků v prostředí.

Abstract:

Enterococci are well known as bacteria which often cause serious human infections. Majority of studies and publications about this genus focus on clinically important species and strains. The less attention is paid to their importance and occurence in the environment (in water, in soil and on the surface of the plants) despite the fact that composition of enterococcal species occured there is richer and phenotypically more variable. The aim of this diploma thesis was isolation and identification of enterococcal strains from the surface of the plants. Untill these days there have been a few articles about occurence of the genus Enterococcus on plants publicated, but majority of them are more than ten years old and does not comply with current taxonomic changes within this genus. The results of this diploma thesis should bring fresh knowledge about occurence and variability of the enterococcal species on the surface of the plants. This work should also enrich basic knowledge about ecology of the genus Enterococcus in general and especially about occurence and variability of enterococci on the surface of the plants in wild nature.
