Innovative Sealing Concepts of a High Pressure Common Rail Injector

Abstract:

The diesel combustion engines are presently the main means of powering the civilian naval and river fleet. Due to the fuel used, in many cases marine fuel oil, they are a significant contributor to environment pollution. One of the possibilities to lower the emissions of particulate matter of those engines is the increase in injection pressure. This thesis attempts to find a new sealing concept for the Common-Rail-Injector assembly of medium speed diesel engines with the power output of about 500 ? 1500 kW/cylinder. The highest injection pressure of State-of-the-Art Common Rail injectors, about 2500 bar, is achieved in modern truck engines. Even though the basic principle of injectors in marine and on-road engines is the same, the solution cannot be assumed directly transferrable between those two applications. The reason is not only the different size of the injectors but also the working conditions and requirements. The CR-injectors are hydraulic systems, controlled by a magnetic valve or a piezo actuator, in which the injected fuel simultaneously acts as the driving fluid of the needle stroke. This combination enables a simplified design, on the other hand causes complications, especially high mechanical wear, material fatigue and corrosion. This thesis uses an actual prototype injector as a starting point. A component of the injector has been evaluated and optimized as to fatigue life. This component was subsequently simlpified into a specimen for the testing of sealing concepts. A total of four concepts has been devised and their sealing potential analyzed using 2D and 3D FEM analysis. Two of the concepts have been developed into hardware test specimens and their behavior evaluated by means of an especially designed test bed.

Abstract:

Vznětové motory zaujímají první místo mezi pohonnými jednotkami civilních námořních a říčních plavidel. Vzhledem k jejich používanému palivu, kterým je často mazut, představují také významný činitel ve znečišťování životního prostředí. Jedna z možností, jak snížit emise tuhých částic produkované těmito motory, je zvýšení vstřikovacího tlaku. Tato práce se věnuje hledání nového těsnícího konceptu pro sestavu vstřikovacího injektoru Common Rail pro středněotáčkové vznětové motory výkonnostní třídy 500 ? 1500 kW/válec. Nejvyšší vstřikovací tlak dnešních systémů typu Common Rail, přibližně 2100 ? 2500 bar, dosahují moderní motory nákladních silničních vozidel. Ačkoli je základní funkční princip injektorů lodních i vozidlových motorů shodný, nelze považovat použitou technologii jako volně přenositelnou mezi těmito dvěma odvětvími. Důvodem jsou nejen odlišné rozměry injektorů, ale též pracovní podmínky a požadavky, které jsou na ně kladeny. Vstřikovače typu Common Rail jsou hydraulické systémy ovládané magnetickým ventilem nebo aktuátorem s piezokrystalem, ve kterých vstřikované palivo zároveň plní roli pracovního media pro pohon pracovního zdvihu jehly injektoru. Toto propojení umožňuje jednodušší stavbu, zároveň však přináší komplikace, především vysoké mechanické a teplotní zatížení komponent, únavu materiálu a korozi. V rámci této práce byl nejprve díl existujícího prototypu vstřikovače zkoumán za účelem odhalení slabých míst a jeho geometrie byla optimalizována pro zvýšení životnosti. Tento díl poté sloužil jako výchozí bod pro odvození zjednodušených zkušebních vzorků. Byly navrženy 4 inovativní těsnicí koncepty, u kterých byla prostřednictvím 2D a 3D analýzy pomocí metody konečných prvků předpovězena míra jejich těsnicích vlastností. U dvou z těchto konceptů byly zhotoveny zkušební vzorky a podrobeny zkouškám na zvlášť zkonstruovaném zkušebním zařízení.
