Pottery firing technology and its relation to production organization and specialization in the Urnfield Culture context

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce řeší problematiku technologie keramiky s důrazem na technologii výpalu v prostředí kultur lužických popelnicových polí. Cíl práce se nezastavuje u pouhého popisu technologie. Technologie je zde vnímána jako projev komplexního sociálního chování. Zadanou problematiku práce řeší prostřednictvím případové studie. Na příkladu sídliště lužické kultury v Turnově – Maškových zahradách byl vytvořen model technologického chování v oblasti výroby keramiky s důrazem na technologii výpalu. Model technologického chování byl založen na etnografických a obecně antropologických poznatcích o technologickém chování, dosavadních archeologických poznatcích o společnosti a technologii keramiky mladší a pozdní doby bronzové ve střední Evropě a v neposlední řadě na samotné archeologické situaci na vybrané lokalitě. Metodou testování jednotlivých důsledků modelu byla prostorová a kvantitativní analýza vybrané části lokality a experimentální replikace technologie výroby keramiky. Klíčem ke srovnání originální a experimentální kolekce keramiky na úrovni mikrostruktury se staly petrografické a mineralogické analýzy vybraných originálních a experimentálních vzorků. Výsledky experimentální analýzy potvrdily hypotézu, že lze nalézt významné rozdíly v teplotních profilech a charakteru atmosféry výpalu mezi dvěma základními typy výpalů – jednoprostorovým a dvouprostorovým – a hrnčířská technologická zařízení lze označit za flexibilní či restriktivní z hlediska aplikovatelnosti odlišných způsobů výpalu. Těmto rozdílům potom odpovídají znaky sledované makroskopicky a především mikroskopicky na keramice. Analýza keramiky z mladší doby bronzové ukázala, že aplikací těchto principů lze významně zúžit potenciální způsoby výpalu a přispět tak k detailnějšímu poznání technologie výpalu. Prostorová analýza sídliště přispěla k interpretaci jednoho z charakteristických rysů mladší a pozdní doby bronzové, kterým je značný podíl přepálené keramiky v souborech pocházejících ze sídelních areálů.

Abstract:

The aim of the dissertation is the research on the pottery firing technology in the LBA in Central Europe. The dissertation examines pottery technology as a complex social phenomenon. Technology is an important manifestation of complex social behavior. The research of technological variability in space and time allows us not only to answer the question about technology itself but also brings an argumentation base for the interpretation of social and cultural background of the technology. The technological hypotheses were based on current archeological evidence, ethnographic analogy, and mineralogical and petrographical analysis of pottery. Two types of analysis were used to test the hypotheses: the intra-site spatial analysis and the experiment. The experiments were designed to answer two basic questions: (a) is the destruction pattern of the hypothetical firing structure comparable with the archaeological situation and (b) does the replicated pottery achieve the same attributes that we can observe in the case of original pottery, and are these attributes specific for the given technology. The experiments have showed that a significant difference can be found at least between one-space and two-space firings. The main criterion for firing description is a firing strategy rather than a type of firing structure itself. Some types of firing structures are flexible in terms of the firing strategy; others, on the contrary, imply only narrow range of firing procedures. We can characterize each type of firing structures by specific range of thermal profiles based on firing procedures applicable in these structures and also by atmospheric conditions of the firings. It is possible to discriminate attributes of particular thermal profiles and the atmosphere development by the mineralogical and petrographical analysis of pottery. On the basis of these attributes we can exclude the firing structures and strategies which do not conform to the identified thermal profiles. The case of the LBA pottery has showed the applicability of the approach. The result of the spatial analysis was a significant contribution to the discussion on the characteristic phenomenon of the LBA pottery assemblages from settlements: high proportion of overfired pottery.
