Weapons of the future: Stuxnet and its Consequences on the Development of International Relations

Abstract:

Rapidní vývoj informačních technologií zasahuje v posledních desítkách let do každodenního života jedince a mimo jiné ovlivňuje obecnou podobu mezinárodního prostředí. Kybernetický prostor je novou doménou pro možné interakce i mezi mezinárodními aktéry. Tyto interakce mohou mít kooperativní povahu, ale také konfrontační, jako v případě kybernetické operace Stuxnet, která byla mířena na íránský jaderný program a ovlivnila ho i v oblasti reálné. Jednalo se o významný milník v pojetí kybernetického prostoru v mezinárodním prostředí. Díky tomu, že tato oblast představuje novou doménu, neexistuje žádný obecný rámec, který by definoval možné reakce na kybernetický útok. Předmětem práce je zkoumat povahu reakcí Íránu na tuto událost a to v kybernetické i reálné oblasti, analyzovat je a následně obě oblasti porovnat.

Abstract:

Rapid development of information technology has been involving in human everyday lives for the last decades. Moreover it has been influencing the basic structure of international environment. The cyberspace is a new domain for interactions, which can have cooperative or confrontational character. The confrontational character has been seen for instance in cyber operation called Stuxnet, which was aiming on the iranian nuclear programme. The consequences where either in physical space and cyberspace. The Stuxnet operation was a milestone for the meaning of cyberspace in the international enviroment. Thanks to the fact, that this is a new domain, there is no framework for the reactions on cyber attacks. The subject of this thesis is analysing iranians reactions on the Stuxnet operation in the cyberspace and physical space and finding the differences between them.
