Ojoyoshu and nature in Sukhavati: Study of Genshin s work in context of Japanese 10th century landscape

Abstract:

Genšinovo Ódžójóšú je jedním z nejvýznamnějších pramenů v historii japonského buddhismu. V tomto prameni z 10. století autor shrnul podle jeho mínění nejzásadnější součásti nauky jednoho z proudů mahájánového buddhismu, tedy buddhismu Čisté země. Mimo věrouky v Ódžójóšú popisuje krajiny pekel i Západní čisté země, Sukhávatí. Tato diplomová práce se pokouší zjistit, jaký symbolický význam mají zvířata a rostliny popsané Ódžójóšú, a to zejména v porovnání s vybranými sútrami, ze kterých Genšin text sestavil. Jedná se o konkrétní druhy zvířat a rostlin, jejichž výčet se výrazně překrývá s popisem Sukhávatí ve vybraných sútrách, avšak nejedná se o doslovné citace. Práce mapuje přenos textů a myšlenek týkajících se buddhismu Čisté země z Indie do Japonska, přičemž identifikuje některá specifika spojená s tímto procesem. V úvodních kapitolách práce přibližuje osobnost Genšina a jeho dílo, v kapitolách následujících analyzuje symboliku jednotlivých druhů a jejich místo v popisech Sukhávatí, a mimo jiné se zaměřuje na každodenní symbolické vnímání barev v náboženských kontextech.

Abstract:

Gensin's Ōjōyōshū is one of the most important sources in the history of Japanese Buddhism. In this 10th century source, the author summarized, in his opinion, the most fundamental parts of the doctrine of one of the movements of Mahāyāna Buddhism, the Pure Land Buddhism. In addition to the doctrine, Genshin describes the landscape of hells and the Western Pure Land, Sukhavatī. This master thesis attempts to find out the symbolic significance of the animal and plant species described by the Ōjōyōshū, especially in comparison with selected sutras from which Genshin's text was compiled. These are particular animal and plant species which overlap significantly with the description of animal and plant species in Sukhavatī in selected sutras, although these are not literal quotations. The thesis maps the transfer of texts and ideas concerning Pure Land Buddhism from India to Japan, identifying some specifics associated with this process. In the introductory chapters, the work introduces the personality of Genshin and his work, then further chapters analyze the symbolism of individual species and their place in the descriptions of Sukhavatī, and last but not least, the final part of the text focuses on the symbolic perception of colors and their everyday usage in religious context.
