Gender within the enviroment of youth competetive swimming

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá genderovaností primárně závodního plavání mládeže. Plavci a plavkyně vždy závodí odděleně a jejich závodní výkony jsou hodnoceny zvlášť. Totéž ale neplatí pro jejich přípravu, která je často/z velké části společná pro muže i ženy (přinejmenším v kategorii mládeže a dorostu, na kterou se práce zaměřuje). Cílem práce je zjistit, jestli trenéři a trenérky přistupují odlišně k přípravě mužů a žen. Sport je vysoce maskulinní prostředí, proto předpokládám, že v rámci společných tréninků funguje genderová hierarchie, která vede k tomu, že trenéři přisuzují větší váhu výkonům svých mužských svěřenců. Tuto hypotézu budu Ověřuji pomocí dotazníkového šetření, jehož respondenty jsou samotní trenéři, kteří rozhodují jak o trénincích, tak i o participaci plavců na závodech. Výzkum má experimentální design s využitím vinět. Trenéři byli dotázáni, jak by postupovali v modelových případech z trenérské praxe, přičemž gender osob v těchto případech byl náhodně variován. Výzkum zahrnuje také kvalitativní komponentu ve formě zúčastněných pozorování tréninků za účelem triangulace kvantitativních zjištění.

Abstract:

This study focuses primarily on the gendered state of competitive youth swimming. Alhought swimmers compete in their own respective gendered categories and are evaluated separately in terms of the actual competition, they often train for these competitions together (this is the case mostly in regards to youth swimming). The aim of this study is to explore whether swimming coaches acknowledge gender differences and base their approach to training on them. Sports in general are considered to be mostly masculine, therefore I hypothesize the existence of gender hierarchy within youth swimming, that leads to coaches leaning more towards male swimmers. This hypothesis is tested using by subjecting these coaches to questionares. In these questionares, using vignettes, coaches are asked how they would react in certain situations. The main reason for using vignettes is to randomly assing cases with different gender to answering caoches. The study also includes a qualitative component, in the form of participant observation, in order to triangulate the quantitative findings.
