Catholic Exiles from Lands of the Bohemian Crown during the Hussite Era (1419-1436)

Abstract:

Ačkoliv je téma katolických exulantů z husitských Čech známo již více než sto let, pro jeho geografickou rozdrobenost a malý vliv na mezinárodní politické dějiny postupuje jeho zpracování velmi pomalu. Práce si proto klade za úkol shrnout dosavadní znalosti k dané problematice a rozšířit je novými doklady exulantů nejen do šířky, ale pomocí analýzy dobře dokumentovaných případů také do hloubky. Studiem narativních i diplomatických pramenů ze zahraničních regionů se tato práce snaží odpovědět i na otázky, jak zahraniční prostředí na České země a jejich problémy pohlíželo a jak přijímalo osoby odtud přicházející. Této problematice je věnována první část práce, která na dané otázky odpovídá jednak rekonstrukcí stereotypního obrazu Čecha-heretika v zahraničních kronikách, jednak také sledováním dopadu husitských válek na zahraniční prostředí prostřednictvím účetních a úředních pramenů rozličné povahy. Druhá část práce na jednotlivých případech sleduje střetávání potřeby katolíků opustit nebezpečnou oblast a snahy centrálních orgánů (žitavská konzistoř, generální kapituly církevních řádů) kontrolovat pohyb těchto osob, a dále dokumentuje strategie exulantů ohledně vytváření vlastních a zapojení se do zahraničních struktur. Ve třetí části jsou rozebrány doklady k ekonomické stránce života v exilu, mezi nimiž vyniká zejména unikátní korpus pramenů k osudům nepomuckého konventu. Čtvrtá část práce se zaměřuje na osobní rozměr problematiky exilu, především na jeho vnímání a prožívání, které se projevují v listech a literární tvorbě. Ve dvou přílohách je k práci připojen také seznam všech již delší dobu známých i nově objevených exulantů (řeholních a světských) a – nakolik je známe – jejich osudů ve formě medailonků.

Abstract:

The subject of the Czech Catholics living in exile during the Hussite movement has been known for more than 100 years. However, its processing has been slow, due to the sources and literature being scattered on a large geographical area and its relatively small influence on the international political history. The thesis is an attempt to summarize the up to date knowledge and to contribute with some newly discovered records as well as with a detailed analysis of the well documented cases. The thesis also deals with the question of how the Czech lands were perceived by the foreign countries and what their attitude towards the Czech exiles was. It is done through the reconstruction of the stereotypical image of the Czechs as heretics in the foreign chronicles and through the analysis of the impact the Hussite wars had on the foreign environment, as recorded in various official documents. The second part of the thesis documents the conflict between the Catholic need of leaving the dangerous region on one hand and the efforts of the supreme authorities (Zittau Consistory, general chapters of monastic orders) to control the mobility of the exiles on the other hand. The third part of the thesis examines the financial aspect of the life in exile, represented most notably by the unique corpus of sources concerning the monastic community of Nepomuk. The fourth part of the thesis focuses on the personal experience with the exile as documented in the letters and literary works. The two appendixes consist of the list of the already known and newly discovered exiles as well as brief accounts of their lives.
