Interpretative phenomenological analysis of the parents‘ experience with sharing ASD diagnosis to children

Abstract:

Předložená práce se zabývá analýzou zkušenosti rodičů se sdělením diagnózy poruchy autistického spektra dítěti. Cílem práce je zachytit a analyzovat bezprostřední zkušenost rodičů v souvislosti s tímto fenoménem a identifikovat co nejširší spektrum témat, které se v souvislosti s ním u rodičů dětí s autismem vyskytují. V teoretické části práce jsou představena všechna teoretická východiska, na nichž byl položen základ prezentovaného výzkumu. Výzkumná část práce obsahuje kvalitativní výzkum, realizovaný metodou polostrukturovaného rozhovoru s rodiči, jehož dominantou je analýza získaných dat metodou IPA a interpretace výsledků výzkumu. U všech respondentů byla vypracována podrobná analýza jejich osobní zkušenost, a to jak na obsahové, lingvistické, tak i konceptuální úrovni. Z každého příběhu vyvstalo několik pro rodinu charakteristických témat, která protkávají jejich subjektivní zkušenost a velkou měrou ovlivnila zkoumaný fenomén. Nakonec byla odhalena témata, která jednotlivé příběhy spojují a společně tak vytváří zcela novou perspektivu v přístupu ke zkoumanému jevu.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the analysis of parents’ experiences with explaining the diagnosis of the autistic spectrum to their children. The goal of the thesis is to examine and analyse the immediate experience of the parents in dealing with this phenomenon as well as to identify the widest possible spectrum of topics related to these problems which parents of autistic children might encounter. The theoretical part of the thesis presents all possible theoretical recourses upon which the aforementioned research is based. The empirical part of the thesis consists of qualitative research fundamentally relying on the method of a semi-structured discussion with parents, focusing mainly on the IPA analysis of the acquired data and the interpretation of the researched results. All the respondent data have been meticulously analysed based on their personal experience on the content level, linguistic level, and conceptual level. All the discussions have shown to have several family-characteristic features and recurring topics following their personal experience and massively shaping the researched phenomenon. By the end of the research, the focus lies upon the previously hidden collective features that connect the individual stories, moreover creating a new ground and perspective towards the examined phenomenon.
