Gender perspective in psychotherapeutic practice

Abstract:

This B.A. thesis focuses on a topic of gender in psychotherapeutic practice in SR. Based on a theoretical framework of social constructionism and „post“ theories, it is the goal of this research to find out how gender is constructed by therapist in Slovakia, in particular those belonging to the therapeutic school called Satir Growth Model. In the theoretical part, there are introduced the basic assumptions of social constructionism and „post“ theories, as well as an understanding of gender that informs this research, and its implications. Further it is addressed how doing gender can be present in therapeutic practice and how are the effects of gender conceptualized from the critical perspective in psychology. From the methodological point of view, this research relies on theoretical thematic analysis and an interview as a method of gathering data. As the results of the study show, gender is a category, which is constructed by the therapists across the data set as well as within data items, that is within each interview, in many different ways. The main themes can be identified as the following: „gender as difference“, „gender as distinction“ and „gender as sameness“. The key topics consist of other themes, which develop the former ones even further. When it is relevant, identified topics are analyzed in relation to therapist to him/herself, with regard to others, including clients, and to the therapeutic process. From the perspective of the study gender represents a rather floating act, which is a subject of repeated negotiation within social interaction. This understanding of gender can be a contribution to the further debate on gender in the therapeutic practice in Slovakia.

Abstract:

Predložená bakalárska práca sa zaoberá témou genderu v psychoterapeutickej praxi v SR. Cieľom výskumu je nahliadnuť cez teoretický rámec sociálneho konštrukcionizmu a “post” teórií, akým spôsobom je gender konštruovaný u terapeutov a terapeutiek v SR, a to konkrétne takých, ktoré/í sa hlásia k terapeutickej škole Model rastu Virginie Satirovej. V teoretickej časti sú predstavené základné východiská sociálneho konštrukcionizmu a „post“ teórií, ako aj vysvetlené porozumenie genderu, z ktorého v práci vychádzam, a jeho ďalšie implikácie. Ďalej je tiež ukázané, ako môže byť robenie genderu prítomné v terapeutickej praxi a ako sú vplyvy genderu v terapii konceptualizované z pohľadu kritických smerov v psychológii. Z metodologického hľadiska využíva výskum teoretickú tematickú analýzu a metódu rozhovoru ako konkrétny nástroj získavania dát. Ako vyplynulo z výsledkov výskumu, gender je kategória, ktorá je u terapeutov a terapeutiek konštruovaná rôzne, či už naprieč dátového súboru, alebo aj v jednotlivých dátových položkách, ktoré predstavuje každé interview. Hlavné identifikované témy sú „gender ako rozdielnosť,“ „gender ako jedinečnosť,“ a „gender ako rovnakosť“. Pod týmito zastrešujúcimi témami sú potom ďalšie témy, ktoré ich rozvíjajú. Tam, kde je to relevantné, sú jednotlivé témy nahliadané osobitne vo vzťahu terapeuta/terapeutky k sebe, k iným, vrátane klientov/klientiek alebo k terapeutickému procesu. Z perspektívy výsledkov výskumu sa gender javí, ako premenlivý akt, ktorý je predmetom opätovného vyjednávania v sociálnej interakcii. Toto porozumenie genderu môže byť prínosom do ďalšej diskusie o genderi v terapeutickej praxi v SR
