Tourism and Spatiotemporal Imagination of Middle-Class Citizens and Villagers in the Nineteenth Century: Tourist Gaze, Lifeworlds, Social Practices

Abstract:

Disertace historizuje turismus "dlouhého" 19. století coby ryze moderní fenomén. Cestování se okolo roku 1800 vytrácí a zaniká, zatímco se rodí, tvaruje a usazuje turismus, který má zcela jinou vnitřní morfologii. Tato proměna mobilitní kultury je založena na zbrusu nové mentalitě (turistickém pohledu), která během 19. století sedimentuje v myšlení člověka a dodnes naše všední uvažování o světě určuje. Tuto moderní pra-emoci vyvolává proměna lidského vnímání času na konci 18. století, kdy se nový časový režim začíná promítat v duchu osvícenského narativu pokroku a opoždění do prostoru. V očích lidí se dosavadní území, oblasti a místa, tedy pouhé toposy, proměňují v chronotopy. V nich turista potkává a prožívá "minulé", "původní", "panenské", "nezkalené", "přirozené" a "svobodné", anebo naopak "budoucí", "pokročilé", "rozvinuté", "rušné", "metropolitní" nebo "kosmopolitní". Autor se s využitím aktérské perspektivy venkovanů a měšťanů snaží vystihnout vývojovou dynamiku a vnitřní rozrůzňování turismu. Neptá se přitom jen na to, jaké představy o minulosti, přítomnosti a budoucnosti vážou v pohledu turisty jednotlivé chronotopy, ale zkoumá i smyslové dojmy, společenské jednání, sociální identity a tělesné praktiky turistů uvnitř těchto areálů: hradů, zřícenin, monumentů, lesů, hor, lázní, pláží, kupé vlaků, palub parníků, ulic, bulvárů, bordelů, hotelů, nákupních domů, tramvají, metra aj.

Abstract:

The thesis historicises the tourism of the 'long' 19th century as a purely modern phenomenon. Traveling fades out and disappears around 1800, while tourism, which has a completely different internal morphology, is born, shaped and settled. This transformation of mobility culture is based on a brand-new mentality (tourist gaze), which sediments in the thinking of man during the 19th century and determines our everyday thinking about the world till now. This modern Ur-emotion is evoked by the transformation of human perception of time at the end of the 18th century, when the new time mode begins to be reflected into space in the vein of the enlightenment narrative of progress and backwardness. In the eyes of the people, the existing territories, areas and places, that is, mere topos, are transformed into chronotopes. In them tourists can meet and experience 'past', 'original', 'virgin', 'intact', 'natural' and 'free', or, conversely, 'future', 'advanced', 'developed', 'busy', 'metropolitan' or 'cosmopolitan'. Using the agency perspective of villagers and middle-class citizens, the author tries to capture the developmental dynamics and internal differentiation of tourism. The author not only asks what ideas about the past, present and future bind particular chronotopes in the tourist gaze, but also explores the sensory impressions, social practices, social identities and bodily practices of tourists within these areas: castles, ruins, monuments, forests, mountains, spas, beaches, train compartments, steamboat decks, streets, boulevards, brothels, hotels, shopping malls, trams, subways, etc.
