Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá převážně anglickými texty o brněnské Vile Tugendhat, jedné z našich dvanácti památek zapsané na Seznamu světového kulturního dědictví. Cílem práce bylo porovnat anglické překlady českých originálů a zjistit, nakolik jsou spolehlivé a věrohodné. Pozornost byla především věnována lexikálně-sémantické rovině překladu. Mimo běžně dostupných elektronických zdrojů byl využit román od Simona Mawera „The Glass Room”, oficiální dokument vydaný porotou UNESCO a některé tištěné odborné publikace v českém a anglickém jazyce. Aby bylo možné vybrané anglické překlady porovnat, bylo nutné vytvořit několik vlastních korpusů. Účelem bylo vybrat nejčastěji opakovaná slova týkající se vily, najít podobné výrazy a navzájem je porovnat. Následně byl sestaven terminologický slovníček a navrženy nejvhodnější kolokace. Mimo jiné byly porovnány i anglické názvy ostatních českých památek UNESCO. Zjištěním bylo, že většina elektronických zdrojů, které se vyskytují na předních místech internetových vyhledávačů, nenabízí adekvátní anglické překlady českých textů a názvy jednotlivých památek se neshodují. Naproti tomu Simon Mawer dokázal ve svém románu vilu vystihnout velice přesně a poutavě. V neposlední řadě tištěné publikace psané anglicky občas zaznamenají nějakou nepřesnost, ale i přesto jsou dobrými a věrohodnými překlady českých verzí.

Abstract:

The Master’s diploma thesis primarily deals with English texts concerning the Tugendhat Villa, one of the Czech twelve sites inscribed on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. The goal of the thesis was to compare the English translations of the Czech original versions and find out how reliable and credible the texts are. Attention was paid to lexical-semantic relations in the translations. Besides the electronic sources that are commonly available via the Internet search engines, the novel The Glass Room by Simon Mawer was discussed, as well as some English publications - translations. In order to be able to analyze and compare the chosen English translations, it was necessary to build some special corpora in the Sketch Engine. The aim was to choose the most frequent words concerning the villa, to find similar expressions and to compare them. Consequently, a glossary was created and the most appropriate collocations were suggested. In addition, the English names of other Czech cultural heritage monuments were compared. The findings show that most electronic sources displayed at the top of the search results of web search engines do not provide adequate English translations of the Czech originals. Furthermore, the names of the cultural heritage sites are not identical. On the other hand, Simon Mawer in his The Glass Room described the Tugendhat Villa very aptly and grippingly. Last but not least, although the English printed publications occasionally suffer from inaccuracies, they are still very reliable and credible translations of the Czech versions.
