Slovakia on the way to the euro-area

Abstract:

The of my BSc thesis topic is the entry of Slovakia into one of the world's largest economies, the euro area. The first part presents a survey of the historical development of the genesis of the European Monetary Union and it describes particular phases of EMU. EMU was a recurring ambition of the European Union from the late 1960s because it promised currency stability and an environment for higher growth and employment. A precondition for the accession of new Member States into the euro area is to meet the Maastricht convergence criteria. The Slovak Republic in a relatively short time met the required criteria, and so starting in January 2009 it became the Member. The Slovak path to the euro area had to undergo a long process and a massive information campaign. Regular monitoring of public opinion and awareness had contributed to eliminating the risks associated with the introduction of the new common European currency. The euro is a strong international currency, backed by the commitment of the euro area Member States. Strong management of monetary policy by the ECB is visible. The final chapter summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the membership and it presents also questionnaire intended to determine the relationship of citizens the Slovak Republic to the overall transition to a new common currency, the euro.

Abstract:

Témou bakalárskej práce je vstup Slovenska do jednej z najväčších svetových ekonomík, eurozóny. Prvá časť predstavuje súhrnný kompilát historického prehľadu o vzniku Európskej menovej únií a jednotlivo popisuje fázy EMU. EMU bola opakujúca sa ambícia Európskej únie z roku 1960, sľubovala menové stability a prostredie pre vyšší rast a zamestnanosť. Podmienkou pre vstup nových členských štátov do eurozóny je splnenie maastrichtských konvergenčných kritérií. Slovenskej republike sa pomerne v krátkom časovom pásme podarilo splniť požadované kritéria, a tak sa od januára 2009 stala právoplatným členom. Cesta do eurozóny prešla dlhým procesom a potrebnou masívnou informačnou kampaňou. Pravidelné monitorovanie názorov verejnosti a informovanosť prispeli k eliminácii rizík súvisiacich so zavedením novej spoločnej európskej meny. Euro je silná medzinárodná mena, opierajúca sa o záväzky členských štátov eurozóny, kde je silne viditeľný manažment menovej politiky zo strany Európskej centrálnej banky. V záverečnej kapitole sú zhrnuté výhody a nevýhody členstva a taktiež spracovaný dotazník, ktorého cieľom bolo zistiť vzťah a vnímanie občanov Slovenskej republiky k celkovému prechodu na novu spoločnú menu euro.
