Population Dynamics and Control Measures for Feral Pigeons (Columba Livia domestica) in different habitats of Prague

Abstract:

This thesis aims to investigate the behavioral patterns and population dynamics of feral pigeons (Columba livia domestica) across different habitats in Prague, Czech Republic. Field observations were conducted during winter throughout five study areas: Náměstí Míru, Václavské náměstí, Náplavka, Letná Park, and Vyšehrad Park. After categorizing pigeon behavior into foraging, roosting, and flying, the roosting was found to be the most observed behavior across all sites, because of plentiful appealing roosting and nesting structures accessible for pigeons throughout the city. Foraging was more common in areas with more reliable food availability, especially at Náměstí Míru and Náplavka, where people intentionally feed pigeons. No clear correlation was found between pigeon density and temperature, wind speed, or precipitation, indicating that food availability plays a more significant role in habitat selection than environmental conditions. The research demonstrates the necessity of implementing management strategies, including food source regulation and small structural modifications to control pigeon populations. Larger-scale, long-term studies monitoring seasonal fluctuations and alternative food sources are recommended for a more comprehensive understanding of pigeon behavior and population management.
