Defining the 'videoart' in the context of Czech visual-arts scene

Abstract:

Cílem mojí práce bylo pevněji uchopit pojem videoart, jasněji vymezit jeho hranice, které se kvůli zdánlivému umístění na pomezí výtvarného umění a filmu zdají být často nezřetelné. Na základě vybraných prací z historie i současnosti českého videoartu jsem postupně vymezil řadu znaků pro video charakteristických (interakce, intermedialita, anti-narativita...), které souhrnně označuji jako videovost. Tu ale, jak zjišťuji, můžeme parciálně prokázat i dílům mimo formát videa. Ve druhém exkurzu se proto věnuji i příkladům z české avantgardní tvorby, které videoart předznamenávají a spolu s ním se řadí do oblasti mediálního umění, tzv. media-artu. Media-art v závěru své práce označuji za samostatnou disciplínu, na rovni výtvarného umění nebo hudby. Videoart pak situuji jako subkategorii této disciplíny a částečně ho tak osvobozuji z pojmosloví výtvarného umění.

Abstract:

The objective of my study was to re-interpret the term videoart and to define clearly its limits, that often seem to be unclear because of its apparent situation between the film and the art. Using the examples from the short history of Czech videoart, I mention some characteristics that usually constitute videoart, such as interaction, intermediality, anti-narativity...; and I try to ensemble these characteristics with the term videocity ("videovost"). These characteristics might be found even in the works that do not use the format of video at all. That's why I took a little excursion into the history od Czech avant-garde and showed some examples of artwoks that might be associated with videoart in the sphere of media-art. In the conclusion of my work, I try to stable media-art at the same level as literature or music and situate videoart (together with film) as its sub-genre.
