Russia’s Accession to the World Trade Organization: Causes, Aims and the Trade Relations with the European Union

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce „Vstup Ruska do Světové obchodní organizace: východiska, cíle a obchod s Evropskou unií“ je postavena na tezi, že zájem Ruska o vstup do WTO byl motivován oportunismem, Rusko se neztotožňuje s principy WTO a ruský pohled na mezinárodní systém optikou realismu není kompatibilní s liberálními principy WTO. Kvůli svým protekcionistickým opatřením Rusko oddaluje pozitivní přínosy členství ve WTO a nedochází tak k intenzifikaci obchodních vztahů s EU. Přínosem této práce je analýza obchodní politiky Ruské federace v rámci WTO a komparace rozdílů mezi závazky a reálnými změnami v ní.

Abstract:

The presented Diploma Thesis “Russia’s Accession to the World Trade Organization: Causes, Aims and the Trade Relations with the European Union” is based on the assumption that Russia’s endeavour to enter the WTO was primarily motivated by opportunistic approach of its political elite. It concludes that Russia’s realist perception of the international system does not coincide with the liberal principles of the WTO. Russia stalls the positive impacts of the membership in the WTO as a result of its countermeasures. Above all, these steps hinder intensification of the trade relations with the EU. Principal benefits of this study are the thorough analysis of the trade policy of the Russian Federation in the frame of the WTO and comparison of the distinctions between Russia’s commitments to this organization and real changes it accomplished.
