The experience of sexuality in people with alexithymic traits

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá tím, jakým způsobem lidé s vyšší mírou alexithymických rysů prožívají svou sexualitu. Jejím cílem je popsat, jaký význam má pro tyto osoby sex, jaký charakter má jejich sexuální život a kterým konkrétním problémům v souvislosti s ním musejí čelit. Účastníci výzkumu byli vybráni podle jejich hrubého skóru na škále Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Výzkumný soubor tvoří celkem devět osob, z toho šest žen a tři muži, ve věkovém rozmezí od osmnácti do čtyřiadvaceti let. Jako metoda pro získávání dat byl v tomto výzkumu použit polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Přepisy rozhovorů byly analyzovány v rámci kvalitativní metodologie, konkrétně pomocí postupů zakotvené teorie. Bylo identifikováno pět hlavních kategorií významů, jež osoby s alexithymickými rysy se sexualitou pojí. Výsledky ukazují, že častým motivem pro provozování sexu je u těchto lidí potřeba vybití a uklidnění. V navazování kontaktu se svými sexuálními partnery bývají spíše pasivní, chovají se nejistě a pociťují nervozitu. O sexu s partnerem komunikují převážně neverbálně a potřebují od něj získávat zpětnou vazbu. Charakteristickým rysem jejich sexuálního života se ukázalo být opakované překračování hranic v tom, co je jim v sexu příjemné. Tato zjištění jsou konfrontována s poznatky získanými v předchozích výzkumech a je upozorněno na omezenou možnost jejich generalizace.

Abstract:

The present study further investigates how people with higher alexithymic traits experience their sexuality. The aim of the research is to describe the importance of sex for these people, what are the typical characteristics of their sexual lives and which specific related issues they must face. Research participants were selected according to their score on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). The research group consists of nine people, including six women and three men, ranging in age from eighteen to twety-four years. For obtaining the data was used the method of semi-structured interview. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed in a context of qualitative methodology, specifically through the procedures of grounded theory. It was identified five major cathegories of meanings which people with higher alexithymic traits associated with sexuality. The finding of the study showed that they often practice sex for release tension and relax. In making contact with their sexual partners they tend to be passive, feel nervous and behave insecure. They communicate about sex with their partners mostly nonverbally and they need some feedback. The characteristic feature of their sex lives is crossing the borders in what is comfortable for them about sex. These findings are confronted with the results obtained in previous studies and the limits of the study are discussed.
