Foreigners from Developed Countries Living in the Czech Republic: The Process of Adaptation and Its Influence on Human Identity

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o cizincích z rozvinutých zemí, kteří dlouhodobě žijí v České republice. Zabývá se problematikou rozhodování a motivů k odchodu do zahraničí. Klade si otázku, proč je pro některé lidi život v zahraničí atraktivní, které faktory podporují rozhodnutí k odchodu z původní země nebo jakou roli zde hraje osobnost člověka a jeho životní historie. Cílem práce je dále popsat celý proces přizpůsobení se novému sociálnímu a kulturnímu prostředí. Zaměřuje se na dobu bezprostředně po příchodu do cizí země, na potíže, se kterými se cizinci během této doby potýkají, a na to, co v tomto období prožívají. Následně se zabývá dalším průběhem procesu adaptace a různými způsoby začleňování se do nové společnosti. Studie také sleduje proměny identity migrantů, ke kterým během pobytu v zahraničí dochází a souvislost odchodu do ciziny se vztahem k vlastnímu domovu. V teoretické části práce jsou nejprve objasněny základní pojmy týkající se tématu a vztahy mezi nimi. Druhou část práce tvoří kvalitativní studie na dané téma. Data získaná polostrukturovanými rozhovory s cizinci byla zpracována metodou tematické analýzy.

Abstract:

The paper is discussing foreigners from developed countries, who have been living in the Czech Republic long-term. It deals with the problematic of deciding and motives to go abroad in the first place. It asks the question why life abroad is attracive to some people, which factors contribute to the decision to leave their homecountry and which role does the personality and history of a person play. The aim of the paper is to describe the whole process of adaptation to the new cultural and social environment. The work is focused on the time immediately after the arrival into the foreign country, on the difficulties they are facing and and what they experience in these times. Subsequently the study discusses further process of adaptation and different ways of joining and integration the new society. It also monitors the transformation of the migrants´ identity, which often takes place while living abroad and relation of moving to another country to their attitudes towards their original home. In the theoretical part basic terminology and relationships among the terms are clarified. The second part of the paper is composed of a qualitative study concerning the given theme. The data acquired through dialougues with the foreigners were processed by the method of thematic analysis.
