Medieval myth of the ruler and his reflection in selected works of fantasy literature

Abstract:

Tématem této práce je představení zmýtizované postavy středověkého panovníka, konkrétně krále a způsobů, jakým se jednotlivé aspekty a atributy promítly v klasických dílech fantasy literatury, konkrétně v dílech Pán prstenů J.R.R. Tolkiena, Letopisech Narnie C.S. Lewise a a cyklu Zaklínač A. Sapkowského. Postava evropského středověkého krále, ať už v kontextu historickém či lidovém má své vlastní specifické zázemí vycházející římských, germánských, židovských i křesťanských tradic, jedná se především o široké spektrum nadpřirozených schopností, kterými pomazaný panovník disponuje a rituálů, s nimiž se tyto schopnosti pojí - například léčitelské schopnosti. Ačkoliv tato představa vymizela společně s transformací raně novověké společnosti, řada lidových, více či méně historických představ o "panu králi" přetrvává dodnes a výše zmíněná díla jsou toho důkazem.

Abstract:

The theme of this bachelor's thesis is the performance of the mythical distorted figure of a medieval monarch, namely the king and the ways in which aspects of these myths were reflected in classic works of fantasy literature, namely those from the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Chronicles of Narnia C.S. Lewis and the Witcher, a story cycle by A. Sapkowski. The figure of europian medieval king, whether in the context of historical or folk, has its own specific background of emerging Roman, Germanic, Jewish and Christian traditions, it is primarily a broad spectrum of supernatural abilities that the anointed monarch possesses and the rituals with which these abilities are associated - for example healing powers. Although this notion has disappeared along with the transformation of early modern society, many popular, more or less historical ideas about the "Lord King" persist to this day, and the aforementioned works are proof that they are deeply rooted in the social subconscious.
