Temporal and spatial analysis of hailstorms of the summer half -year on the territory of Moravia and Silesia in the 19th and 20th centuries

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá zpracováním klimatologie krupobití letního půlroku (duben až září) na území Moravy a Slezska v 19. a 20. století na základě systematických pozorování meteorologických stanic Českého hydrometeorologického ústavu (ČHMÚ) a dokumentárních zdrojů. Údaje z meteorologických stanic jsou značně ovlivněny pečlivostí pozorování. Protože zejména v zimním půlroce hrozí záměna krup s podobnými srážkovými jevy (zmrzlý déšť, námrazové krupky), byly analýzy omezeny jen na období letního půlroku. Největší pozornost byla soustředěna na komplexní analýzu krupobití v období 1961-2000, kdy jsou údaje nejkvalitnější. Z geografického rozložení průměrného počtu dnů s krupobitím je zřejmý jejich nárůst s nadmořskou výškou s maximy v oblasti Hrubého Jeseníku a Moravskoslezských Beskyd. Z údajů 135 stanic byla sestavena řada počtu dnů s krupobitím pro Moravu a Slezsko, která ve studovaném období vykazuje statisticky významný sestupný trend (-2,3 dne/10 let). Maximum počtu dnů s krupobitím připadá na měsíc květen, následovaný červnem (dohromady téměř 50 % všech dnů s krupobitím). Metodou MESA byly v řadě zjištěny statisticky významné cykly v trvání 2,2 a 3,3 roku a lineární trend. Obdobné analýzy byly provedeny i pro osm vybraných profesionálních stanic. Podle typizace synoptických situací ČHMÚ se 87,6 % dnů s krupobitím vyskytlo při cyklonálních situacích (především B, NEc, SWc2, Ec a C), z anticyklonálních situací se nejvíce podílela Wal. Při prodloužení časových řad na základě pozorování meteorologických stanic před rokem 1961 se jako limitující faktor ukázal proměnlivý počet použitých stanic. V řadě byly patrné tři úrovně kolísání v závislosti na počtu stanic. Pro 19. století byla analýza na základě systematických pozorování doplněna i údaji z dokumentárních pramenů. Tyto údaje mají ovšem odlišný charakter. Zahrnují většinou pouze případy, kdy krupobití způsobilo škody, a vyznačují se značnou časovou i prostorovou heterogenitou. Nemohou sice zcela nahradit systematická pozorování, ale mohou je významně doplnit. Analýza škod na základě dokumentárních pramenů ukázala výraznou převahu škod na vegetaci (téměř 85 % záznamů), méně časté byly škody na budovách (více než 13 %) a pouze v extrémních případech se hovoří o zabitém zvířectvu a zraněných lidech.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis concerns with the climatology of hailstorms in the summer half-year (April - September) on the territory of Moravia and Silesia in the 19th and 20th centuries using observations from meteorological stations of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) and documentary sources as the information basis. The data from meteorological stations are significantly influenced by observer accuracy. The probability of mistaking a hailstorm by another type of solid precipitation (frozen rain, ice pellets) increases in the winter half-year. This was the reason to prefer the summer half-year for the analysis. The main focus concentrated on the complex analysis of hailstorms in the period 1961-2000 which guarantees the best quality of observations. Considering geographical distribution of the number of days with hailstorms, there is an evident increase with increasing height above sea level, with maxima in the regions of the Hrubý Jeseník and the Moravian-Silesian Beskids Mountains. A series of the number of days with hailstorms for Moravia and Silesia was obtained on the basis of data from 135 meteorological stations, and it exhibits a statistically significant decreasing trend (-2.3 days/10 years) in the studied period. Within the summer half-year the maximum number of days with hailstorms takes place in May, followed by June (a combined total of almost 50 %). Application of the MESA method revealed statistically significant cycles within this series with durations of 2.2 and 3.3 years and linear trend. Analogical analyses were implemented for eight professional meteorological stations. According to CHMI classification of synoptic situations, 87.6 % of days with hailstorms occurred during cyclonic situations. Extension of the series by data from meteorological observations before 1961 discovered the number of used stations as an important limiting factor: three levels of fluctuation, depending on the number of stations, were evident in the series. For the 19th century, the analysis of the data from systematic observations was completed by information about hailstorms from documentary sources. This type of data has different character because it contains mostly only information about hailstorms causing damage and is characterized by considerable temporal and spatial heterogeneity. Therefore, the information about hailstorms from documentary sources cannot substitute but can significantly complement the systematic observations.
