Wikileaks from the Viewpoint of Information Ethics

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis "Wikileaks from the Viewpoint of Information Ethics" presents to the reader the history of Wikileaks and the affairs of making classified documents public, which had a significant impact on today's geopolitical relationships. In the thesis, the activity of Wikileaks is being assessed from the viewpoint of information ethics. It analyses the basic issues of ethics - the extent of the freedom of speech, the right to information and security. The moral impacts of publishing classified documents represent a strong influence to the future of the development of the freedom of speech on the Internet as well as to the institutional tendencies to restrict the extent of freedom of speech. The thesis presents both negative and positive aspects of publishing classified documents, supporting the arguments with concrete evidence. In addition, it compares the activity of Wikileaks to the only case of similar kind which represents an important precedent for the field of the freedom of speech. Since the problematic has not been dealt with sufficiently in the Czech academic sphere, the thesis also aims to present the reader with the basics about this problematic, to point out the worldwide impact of the Wikileaks's activity and at the same time, to provide theoretical and material support for further research in this field.

Abstract:

Bakalárska diplomová práca „Wikileaks z hľadiska informačnej etiky“ oboznamuje čitateľa s históriou Wikileaks a udalosťami zverejňovania tajných dokumentov, ktoré zásadné ovplyvnili súčasné geopolitické vzťahy. Činnosť Wikileaks je v práci hodnotená z hľadiská informačnej etiky. Rozoberá základné etické problémy; mieru slobody prejavu, práva na informácie a bezpečnosť. Morálne dopady zverejňovania tajných dokumentov predstavujú signifikantný vplyv na budúcnosť vývoja slobody prejavu na Internete ako aj inštitucionálnych tendencií obmedziť mieru slobodného prejavu. Práca prezentuje na konkrétnych prípadoch negatívne a pozitívne stránky zverejňovania zároveň porovnáva činnosť Wikileaks s Pentagon Papers, jediným prípadom podobného charakteru, ktorý predstavuje dôležitý precedens v oblasti slobody prejavu. Práca si kladie za cieľ zoznámiť čitateľa zo základnou problematikou, poukázať na významný celospoločenský presah činnosti Wikileaks, a zároveň poskytnúť teoretickú a materiálnu oporu pre budúci výskum v tejto oblasti.
