Examples of Environmental Attitudes in Czech Theory of Architecture and Urbanism in the first half of 20th century

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je sondou do historie české architektury, urbanismu a územního plánování, ve které hledá projevy environmentálního myšlení. To je chápáno jako takové uvažování, které se pokouší kriticky hodnotit a působit proti nepříznivým zásahům lidské činnosti na přírodní prostředí. Po krátké zmínce o dobových zahraničních trendech se text věnuje českým poměrům v první polovině 20. století, zkoumá tehdejší odborná periodika a analyzuje vybrané texty nejvýznamnějších reprezentantů vymezeného environmentálního přístupu. Analýza odpovídá na tři hlavní otázky: Co autoři považovali za nepříznivé zásahy lidské činnosti do přírodního prostředí? Jaká řešení navrhovali? A proč by se těmto nepříznivým zásahům mělo zabraňovat? Text odhaluje překvapivé skutečnosti, připomíná zapomenutá jména a přináší staronové podněty do vztahu: architektura a životní prostředí.

Abstract:

This thesis is a probe into the history of Czech architecture, urbanism and town and country planning. The thesis aims to search these premises for examples of environmental attitudes, which are understood as efforts to critically evaluate and react against negative impact of human activity on the natural environment. Following a brief introduction on foreign architectural trends, the analysis continues with focus on the situation in Czech architecture and urbanism during first half of 20th century. The thesis does so through discussing the contemporary professional journals and analyzing selected contributions by the most significant representatives of “environment-friendly” architectonic attitude. The aim is to answer what appear to be the three most important questions: What was considered as negative effects of human activity on the environment? What were the solutions proposed? Why should there be a need to prevent these negative effects? The thesis discovers some surprising facts, recalls names forgotten and brings old impulses into a new relation: architecture and the environment.
