Opportunities to Develop Learning Competency in Geography Instruction

Abstract:

Disertační práce je zaměřena na problematiku příležitostí k rozvíjení kompetence k učení ve výuce zeměpisu. V teoretické části vymezujeme klíčové pojmy, jako jsou kompetence k učení, příležitosti k učení, výukové situace a učební úlohy. Definujeme zastřešující konstrukty produktivní kulturu vyučování a učení a kvalitu výuky v obsahově zaměřeném přístupu. V empirické části představujeme náš výzkum jako kvantitativně-kvalitativní šetření, jehož hlavním cílem bylo zjistit, jaké charakteristiky vykazují příležitosti k rozvíjení kompetence k učení, které nabízí výuka zeměpisu. Záměrem kvantitativní analýzy byla identifikace a kategorizace příležitostí k učení v souboru padesáti vyučovacích hodin zeměpisu na druhém stupni základní školy a nižším stupni gymnázia od šesti učitelů, zaznamenaných prostřednictvím videa. Výsledky kvantitativní analýzy poukázaly na to, že všichni sledovaní učitelé dávali přednost učebním úlohám kognitivně nižší náročnosti, žáci učební úlohy minimálně zadávali, ve velké míře řešili a minimálně se podíleli na jejich hodnocení. Kvalitativní analýza si kladla za cíl prostřednictvím metodiky 3A (anotace, analýza, alterace) posoudit kvalitu šesti vybraných výukových situací, přičemž (v návaznosti na analýzu) byly navrhovány alterace (kvalitativně lepší varianty) těch situací, u kterých nebyl plně využit jejich potenciál k rozvíjení kompetence k učení. Kvalitativní analýza ukázala, že se žáci se ve výuce pohybovali na nižších dvou úrovních práce s obsahem, tzn. naučení se pojmům a porozumění konceptům v kontextu příslušného vyučovacích předmětu. Nejvyšší úroveň zahrnující kategorii metakognice se do výuky promítla jen částečně. V rámci shrnutí výsledků kvantitativní i kvalitativní analýzy jsou nabídnuta doporučení, jak ve výuce podpořit rozvíjení kompetence k učení v zájmu zvýšení kvality výuky.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis focuses on the topic of opportunities to develop learning competency in Geography instruction. In the theoretical part, we define the key terms of the thesis, such as learning competency, opportunities to learn, classroom situations and learning tasks. In addition, we define some relevant constructs, namely “new” (productive) culture of teaching and learning and instructional quality in the content-oriented approach. In the empirical part, we present our research as a quantitative-qualitative investigation whose main aim was to find out what characteristics of opportunities to develop learning competency are to be identified in Geography instruction. The aim of the qualitative analysis was the identification and categorisation of opportunities to learn in the sample of fifty video-recorded Geography lessons of six teachers from lower secondary schools and lower grades of grammar schools. The results of the quantitative analysis showed that all observed teachers had preferred learning tasks with a lower level of cognitive load, pupils had rarely set learning tasks by themselves, they had very often solved them and they had been rarely involved in the evaluation of the tasks. The aim of the qualitative analysis was to assess the quality of six classroom situations by means of the AAA methodology (annotation, analysis, alternative). Based on the analysis phase, alternatives of situations with not fully used potential of developing learning competency (qualitatively better variants) are suggested. The qualitative analysis showed the occurrence of two lower levels of pupils’ work with content during the instruction: learning terms and understanding concepts in the context of the relevant subject. The highest level including the category of metacognition occurred only partly during the instruction. Concluding the results of the quantitative and qualitative analysis, some recommendations for developing learning competency in connection with the enhancement of instructional quality are suggested.
