Impact of drought on spring barley yields in selected districts of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Vliv sucha na výnosy jarního ječmene ve vybraných okresech České republiky“ hodnotí dopady sucha na výnosy jarního ječmene ve zvolených okresech České republiky. Metodika je založena na zpracování dat Českého statistického úřadu a dat z portálu intersucho.cz. Jedním ze zásadních kritérií výběru okresů (zvoleny byly okresy Jihomoravského kraje a Kraje Vysočina) byla jejich rozdílná nadmořská výška. Pro jejich ornou půdu byla vyhodnocena vlhkost půdy a to její 30 resp. 50% nasycenost v období duben-červen a současně samostatně pro květen, který je z pohledu dopadů sucha nejkritičtějším měsícem pro většinu obilnin, a tedy i pro jarní ječmen. Výsledky naznačují, že v průběhu období 2000-2022 došlo až na suché roky ve většině okresů ke zvyšování výnosů. V Jihomoravském kraji byly výnosy ve sledovaném období značně variabilní. Z tohoto pohledu vychází jako vhodnější pro pěstování jarního ječmene oblasti Kraje Vysočina, neboť ve sledovaném období byly výnosy průměrně vyšší, než v Jihomoravském kraji a v posledním desetiletí také stabilnější. Pro sledované období byl typický rok 2022, kdy došlo v okresech Jihomoravského kraje ke snížení výnosů oproti předchozímu roku a v okresech Kraje Vysočina docházelo naopak k růstu výnosů. Při pohledu na mapy s relativním nasycením půdy bylo zřejmé, že v roce 2022 byl v Jihomoravském kraji patrný značný vláhový deficit oproti oblastem Kraje Vysočina. V posledních letech však dochází ke snižování osevních ploch jarního ječmene, což by mohlo znamenat, že zemědělci přestávají tuto plodinu pěstovat v oblastech, kde se jí kvůli suchu příliš nedaří. Výnosy však také ovlivňují šlechtitelé odolnějšími odrůdami, pomáhá změna agrotechniky a řada dalších faktorů.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis "Impact of drought on spring barley yields in selected districts of the Czech Republic" evaluates the impact of drought on spring barley yields in selected districts of the Czech Republic. The methodology is based on the processing of data from the Czech Statistical Office and data from the intersucho.cz portal. One of the main criteria for selecting the districts (the districts of the South Moravian Region and the Vysočina Region were chosen) was their different altitudes. The soil moisture of arable land was evaluated, namely its 30 and 50% saturation in the period April-June, and also separately for May, which is the most critical month for most cereal crops, and therefore also for spring barley, in terms of drought impacts. The results suggest that, except for the dry years, there has been an increase in yields in most districts over the period 2000-2022. In the South Moravian Region, yields were highly variable over thise period. From this point of view, the Vysočina region is more suitable for spring barley cultivation, as yields were on average higher than in the South Moravian region and have also been more stable over the last decade. The year 2022 was typical for the monitored period, in the districts of the South Moravian Region there was a decrease in yields compared to the previous year and in the districts of the Vysočina Region there was observed yeld growth. Looking at the maps with relative soil saturation, it was clear that in 2022 there was a significant moisture deficit in the South Moravian Region compared to the areas of the Highlands Region. However, in recent years there has been a reduction in the area sown to spring barley, which could mean that farmers are limiting growing the crop in areas where it is not doing well due to drought. However, breeders are also influencing yields through more resistant varieties, hepls changes in agrotechnique measures and a range of other factors.
