Attachment parenting in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Kontaktní rodičovství je poměrně populárním rodičovským trendem v České republice. Praktiky kontaktního rodičovství mohou být pro rodiče pozitivní inspirací zejména v kojeneckém věku, ve kterém se mnoho prostředků tohoto trendu (např. reakce na pláč dítěte a dostupnost pro dítě, kojení dítěte na požádání apod.) kryje s vývojovými potřebami dítěte (Lubotzky-Gete a kol., 2021). S rostoucím věkem dítěte se zvyšují i požadavky na schopnosti rodičů senzitivně volit rodičovské prostředky vzhledem k potřebám dítěte, vlastním potřebám a fungování rodiny (Saxbe a kol., 2018). I v rámci následování nějakého rodičovského trendu je proto vhodné být flexibilní a volit ty prostředky, které dávají vzhledem k věku a potřebám dítěte smysl (Connell-Carrick, 2006). Právě na příkladu kontaktního rodičovství ukazovali někteří autoři (např. Huisman & Joy, 2014; Chae, 2014) výraznou dogmatičnost a důraz na rozdělování rodičovských praktik na „dobré“ a „špatné“, což může vést jednak k velkému tlaku na rodiče a jednak k přílišnému ulpívání na určitých rodičovských praktikách (Douglas & Michaels, 2004). Prezentovaný disertační projekt proto zkoumal kontaktní rodičovství v České republice. První část projektu se zaměřila na praktiky, které se s následováním trendu kontaktního rodičovství v České republice pojí. Bylo analyzováno celkem 42 rozhovorů se ženami následujícími trend kontaktního rodičovství v České republice. K analýze byla použita metoda tematické analýzy. Byla identifikována celkem tři hlavní témata - kontakt jako reakce na potřeby dítěte, respekt vůči dítěti a rozpor mezi představami o kontaktním rodičovství a skutečností. Druhá část projektu se věnovala tandemovému kojení jako specifické praktice kontaktního rodičovství a zároveň jako příkladu jedné z praktik kontaktního rodičovské používané u starších dětí. V rámci druhé části dizertačního projektu byla položena otázka, jaké zkušenosti mají matky praktikující kontaktní rodičovství v České republice s tandemovým kojením. K analýze byly vybrány celkem čtyři rozhovory se ženami, které provozují tandemové kojení, tedy kojí dvě své děti zároveň, přičemž mladší dítě je v batolecím věku a starší dítě ve věku předškolním. Analýza proběhla metodou IPA, přičemž byla identifikována čtyři hlavní témata. Prvním tématem byla snaha udržet kojení za každou cenu, druhým tématem byla matka uprostřed, třetím tématem bylo tandemové kojení jako jistota pro starší dítě v novém uspořádání rodiny a snaha matky o podporu sourozeneckých vztahů a nakonec posledním tématem byla podpora i kritika tandemového kojení vedoucí k upevnění přesvědčení. Třetí část projektu zkoumala formování rodičovského přístupu u žen zažívajících v kontaktním rodičovství krizi, které přesto praktiky kontaktního rodičovství ve výchově svých dětí používají. Ve třetí části projektu tedy byla položena otázka, jaké zkušenosti považují matky hlásící se ke kontaktnímu rodičovství v České republice za klíčové při formování svého rodičovského přístupu. K analýze byly vybrány rozhovory s těmi matkami, které explicitně uvedly, že ve svém rodičovském přístupu zažívají krizi. Metodou IPA bylo analyzováno celkem osm rozhovorů. Vznikly tři hlavní témata – výchova dítěte jako „léčba“, revolta a snaha „dělat to jinak“ a následek chybějící sociální opory po přechodu k mateřství.

Abstract:

Attachment parenting in the Czech Republic – abstract Attachment parenting has become a relatively popular parenting trend in the Czech Republic. Attachment parenting practices can provide positive inspiration for parents, especially during the child’s infancy, because many measures characteristic of this trend, such as response to child’s crying and being available to the child, breastfeeding on demand, etc., coincide with the child’s developmental needs (Lubotzky-Gete et al., 2021). As the child grows, so do the demands on parents’ ability to sensitively choose parental measures concerning the child’s needs, the parent’s personal needs, and family functioning (Saxbe et al., 2018). Therefore, it is necessary to be flexible and, within the framework of selected parental trend, choose only such measures that make sense according to the age and needs of the child (Connell-Carrick, 2006). Some authors (e. g. Huisman & Joy, 2014; Chae, 2014) illustrated, on the example of attachment parenting, significant dogmatism and emphasis on dividing parental practices into “good” and “bad”. However, such classification can place either significant pressure on the parents or excessive adherence to certain parental practices (Douglas & Michaels, 2004). The project if presented PhD thesis, therefore, examined attachment parenting in the Czech Republic. The first part of the project focused on practices associated with following the trend of attachment parenting in the Czech Republic. Altogether, a total of 42 interviews with Czech women applying attachment parenting and its principles were analysed. The analysis relied on the method of thematic analysis. The author identified three major themes: contact as a response to the child’s needs, respect for the child, and the discrepancy between ideas regarding attachment parenting and reality. The second part of the project concentrates on the topic of tandem breastfeeding as a specific attachment parenting practice and, at the same time, as an example of one of the attachment parenting practices used for older children. Moreover, in the second part of the PhD thesis, the author tried to determine the experiences of Czech mothers practising attachment parenthood with tandem breastfeeding. Altogether, four interviews with women practising tandem breastfeeding were analysed; tandem breastfeeding means that women simultaneously breastfeed two of their children. While the younger child is in toddler age, the older child is a pre-schooler. The analysis was performed using the IPA method; consequently, four main themes were identified: The mother’s effort to maintain breastfeeding at all costs; the concept of the central position of the mother; tandem breastfeeding as providing security for the older child concerning a new family arrangement and the mother’s effort to support establishing of sibling relationships; and finally, the support and criticism of the tandem breastfeeding practice that may lead to consolidation of a particular belief. Finally, the third part of the project explored the topic of forming a parenting approach by women experiencing a crisis when practising attachment parenting, who nevertheless use its practices in the upbringing of their children. In this part of the project, the author tried to determine what experiences the mothers applying attachment parenthood in the Czech Republic consider vital in shaping their parental approach. Only those interviews were selected if the mothers explicitly stated that they experienced a crisis in their parenting approach. A total of eight interviews were analysed using the IPA method. Three main themes were identified: The upbringing of a child as “treatment,” revolt and the effort to “do it differently”, and the consequence of a lack of social support upon entering motherhood.
