Dionysus in Art and Life of Men in Antiquity (From the early to the Late Antiquity)

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o Dionýsovi v umění a životě antického člověka. Popsány jsou mýty související s Dionýsovým narozením, objevením vína, putováním po světě, setkáváním s odpůrci, dobytím Indie a nakonec vstoupení na Olymp mezi božstva. Následuje historický vývoj jeho kultu v mínojském a mykénském období, v archaickém, klasické i hellénistickém Řecku, u Etrusků a v Římě až do nástupu křesťanství. Další částí je popis svátků slavených na jeho počest, zejména malé a velké Dionýsie, Lénaje a Anthestérie v Řecku a Liberalie v Římě. Následuje popis mystérií, mimo jiné na základě díla Eurípida a Livia, a také popis fresek ve Ville mystérií v Pompejích. Dalším typem mysterijního kultu byl orfismus, pro nějž byl Dionýsos hlavním bohem. Nakonec je popsána typologie Dionýsova vyobrazení v umění včetně atributů, doplněná o katalog s vybranými díly.

Abstract:

The thesis is about Dionysus in art and life of men in antiquity. There are described the myths associated with the birth of Dionysus, the invention of wine, terrestrial journey, meetings with adversaries, conquer of India and finally his Ascension to Olympus among the other gods. Next topic is historical development of his cult in Minoan an Mycenaean period, in the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Greece, in Etruscan and Roman culture, until the expansion of Christianity. Another part consists of the description of the festivals celebrated in his honour, especially the Rural and City Dionysia, the Lenaian and the Anthesteria in Greece, and the Liberalia in Rome. Next chapter is a description of mysteries based (besides other things) on the Euripides´ and Livy´s mentions and the frescoes in the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii. Another type of mystery cult was the Orphism, for which Dionysus was the main god. Finally there is described the typology of Dionysus representations in art, including attributes. This chapter is accompanied by a catalogue with selected pieces of work.
