Substance Use in Retirement Homes from the Perspective of Workers – Experiences and Impact on Social Interaction

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zkušenostmi pracovníků s užíváním návykových látek klienty v domovech pro seniory. Cílem práce je zjistit, zda mají pracovníci ve vybraných domech pro seniory zkušenosti s uvedeným jevem, pokud ano, jaký to má dle jejich názoru vliv na sociální interakce v těchto zařízeních. Za účelem zkoumání byl realizován kvalitativní výzkum ve vybraných domovech pro seniory. Základní kontext výzkumu vycházel z poznatků odborné literatury, které se týkají několika témat, jako je prostředí domovů pro seniory, informace ohledně klientů a pracovníků těchto zařízení, definování pojmů zkušenost a sociální interakce, téma užívání návykových látek senioři jako specifická skupina uživatelů a konzumace v domovech pro seniory. Metodická část popisuje kvalitativní strategii výzkumu, zabývá se metodami získávání dat, kterými jsou v tomto případě polostrukturovaný rozhovor a analýza dokumentu, obsahuje popis průběhu získávání, zpracovávání a analyzování dat. Interpretační část analyzuje získaná data pomocí techniky kódování. Hlavní výzkumná otázka je zodpovězena prostřednictvím dílčích výzkumných otázek, které zároveň identifikují oblasti, ve kterých mají pracovníci zkušenosti s užíváním alkoholu a marihuany, zneužíváním léků a kouřením cigaret ze strany klientů. Jedná se o oblast příjmu klientů, oblast postupů a metod, které aplikují pracovníci v souvislosti s konzumací zmíněných látek klienty a oblast vlivu konzumace na sociální interakce mezi klienty navzájem, mezi klienty a pracovníky a mezi klienty, případně pracovníky a prostředím mimo zařízení.

Abstract:

This thesis looks at the experience of workers of substance use by clients in retirement homes. The objective of the study is to ascertain whether workers in selected retirement homes have experience with the phenomenon described, and if so what impact they consider it to have on social interaction within these facilities. Qualitative research was undertaken to investigate the matter in selected retirement homes. The research’s basic context was based on the findings of academic literature in regard to a number of matters such as the retirement home environment, information about clients and workers in these facilities, defining the terms ‘experience’ and ‘social interaction’, the issue of substance use by old people as a specific group of users and consumption within retirement homes. The methodology section describes the research’s qualitative strategy, looks at data acquisition methods which in this case are represented by semi-structured interviews and document analysis, and contains a description of the course of data acquisition, and data processing and analysis. The interpretation section analyses the data obtained using a coding technique. The main research question is answered through research sub-questions which also identify the fields in which the workers have experience of alcohol and marihuana use, medicine abuse and cigarette smoking by clients. This involves the fields of receiving clients, procedures and methods applied by workers in regard to the consumption of the substances in question by clients, and the impact of consumption on social interaction between clients, between clients and workers and between clients or workers and the environment outside the facilities.
