Shape and position of lips in relation to underlying skeletal structures and dentition

Abstract:

Estimation of the shape, size and position of lips from the skull for facial approximation has often been limited in the past by subjective interpretation. In recent years, significant new research has been available to help define best practices in this field. However, there is little research into the Central European population. This work deals with the application of some selected methods of approximation of red lips on a sample of 60 subjects of the current Central European population. Selected CT scans of dental patients were segmented into 3D models of skulls and faces. In these models, several dimensions were subsequently measured and applied to three methods of approximating lip width and height. The results were later compared to the actual dimensions. Of the two methods of lip width approximation observed, the method using foramin infraorbitalia proved to be reliable when applied to a sample of the Central European population. Methods for estimating red lip height have also proven to be appropriate leads for approximating the lip height of the Central European population.

Abstract:

Odhad tvaru, velikosti a polohy rtů z lebky na aproximaci obličeje byl v minulosti často omezený subjektivní interpretací. V posledních letech jsou k dispozici nové významné výzkumy, které pomáhají definovat nejlepší postupy v této oblasti. Existuje ale málo výzkumů, které by se zabývaly středoevropskou populací. Tato práce se zabývá aplikací některých vybraných metod aproximace červeně rtů na vzorek 60 lidí současné středoevropské populace. Vybrané CT záznamy stomatologických pacientů byly segmentovany v 3D modely lebek a obličejů. Na těchto modelech bylo následně změřených několik rozměrů, které byly aplikovány na tři metody aproximace šířky a výšky rtů. Výsledky byly později porovnávány se skutečnými rozměry. Ze dvou sledovaných způsobů aproximace šířky rtů se metoda použitím foramina infraorbitalia prokázala jako spolehlivá při aplikaci na vzorek středoevropské populace. Metody pro odhad výšky červeně rtů se také prokázaly jako vhodné postupy pro aproximaci výšky rtů středoevropské populace.
