Personality correlates of the process of selfforgiving and forgiving others

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between forgiveness of others/ or self–forgiveness (as personality traits) and a personality types according to MBTI typology. Our research was realized in a sample of 174 participants, 18 – 30 aged in Czech speaking surroundings. Also we were focused on some other variables – subjective degree of religiosity, awareness of our faults, upbringing to forgiveness, a negative experience survived, an experience of forgiveness received. For data collection we used a questionnaire compounded from: MBTI, Czech adaptation of The Forgiving Personality Scale (investigates forgiveness of others), Czech adaptation of The Heartland Forgiveness Scale (a part that investigates self-forgiveness) and some other items created by us to investigate also other variables. Analysis showed a significant relationship between forgiveness of others and personality dimension Feeling – Thinking and Extraversion – Introversion. Trait forgiveness of others was positively related to F (rs = 0,351; p = 0,000) and E ((rs = 0,242; p = 0,001) and negatively related to T ((rs = - 0,311; p = 0,000) and I (rs = - 0,174; p = 0,011). Other dimensions (S – N, J – P) were not related to this trait. There were significant differences among personality types E_F_ and I_T_ regarding to forgiveness of others. The self-forgiveness trait was related to any dimension of personality. The relationship between two investigated traits and other variables was also interesting. The exploitation of our findings we propose in discussion.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce bolo skúmať súvislosti osobnostných čŕt odpúšťania sebe a iným s osobnostnými typmi podľa typológie MBTI. Výskum sme realizovali na výskumnej vzorke 174 respondentov vo veku 18 – 30 rokov, v česky hovoriacom prostredí. Skúmali sme aj niektoré vedľajšie premenné – subjektívnu mieru religiozity, vedomie vlastnej nedokonalosti, výchovu k odpúšťaniu, prežitie negatívneho zážitku, či zážitku prijatia odpustenia. Pre zber dát sme použili dotazník, ktorého časti tvorili: metóda MBTI, nami adaptovaná verzia The Forgiving Personality Scale skúmajúca črtu odpúšťania iným, nami adaptovaná časť metódy The Heartland Forgiveness Scale skúmajúca črtu odpúšťania sebe, a ďalšie nami vytvorené položky skúmajúce vedľajšie premenné. Výsledky poukázali na významný súvis črty odpúšťania iným s osobnostnými dimenziami cítenie (F) – myslenie (T) a extraverzia (E) – introverzia (I). Konkrétne črta odpúšťania iným súvisela kladne s F (rs = 0,351; p = 0,000) a E (rs = 0,242; p = 0,001) a záporne s T (rs = - 0,311; p = 0,000) a I (rs = - 0,174; p = 0,011). Súvis tejto črty s dimenziami S – N a J – P sa nepreukázal. Medzi osobnostnými typmi sa prejavili významné rozdiely v črte odpúšťania iným pri porovnaní typov E_F_ a I_T_. Črta odpúšťania sebe nesúvisela so žiadnou osobnostnou dimenziou. Zaujímavé boli aj súvislosti oboch čŕt s vedľajšími premennými. Možnosti využitia našich zistení prinášame v diskusii.
