Fierabras in the Spanish Literature

Abstract:

The main objective of the bachelor’s thesis is investigation into presence and development of the former medieval narration and French chanson de geste Fierabras in Spanish literature. At first it is aimed to set relationship between French text and its first translation entitled La Historia del emperador Carlo Magno by Nicoláse de Piamonte by means of the theory of palimpsest by Gérard Genette. The second chapter is devoted to their convergences as well as divergences. Spanish texts are introduced in the third and the fourth chapter and are based only on Piamont’s version. First of them is El Ingenioso Hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, whose author Miguel de Cervantes chooses a motive of Fierabrase’s balsam which he let achieve absolute profanation in a grotesque carnival ritual. After such a subversion of former values the author Pedro Calderón de la Barca has no choice but to select a new configuration in his theatrical play La Puente de Mantible. Furthermore, it succumbs to dominant canon, so-called the comedy de capa y espada and becomes so different from the former version that work is considered to be the end of intertext’s discourse and also the end of the research.

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem bakalářské práce je zkoumání přítomnosti a vývoje původní středověké narace, francouzské chanson de geste Fierabras ve španělské literatuře. Nejdříve se pomocí teorie palimpsestu Gérarda Genetta pokoušíme ustanovit vztah mezi francouzským textem a jeho prvním překladem nazvaným La Historia del emperador Carlo Magno od Nicoláse de Piamonte. Jejich konvergencím i divergencím je věnována druhá kapitola. Ve třetí a čtvrté kapitole představujeme španělské texty, které vycházely pouze z Piamontovy verze. Prvním z nich je El Ingenioso Hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, jehož autor Miguel de Cervantes si vybírá motiv Fierabrasova balzámu, který nechává v groteskním karnevalovém rituálu dosáhnout úplné profanace. Po takové subverzi původních hodnot, autorovi Pedru Calderónovi de la Barca nezbývá než zvolit ve své divadelní hře La Puente de Mantible zcela novou konfiguraci, která navíc podléhá i dominantnímu kánonu doby, tzv. komediím de capa y espada a stává se natolik odlišnou od verze původní, že dílo považujeme za závěr intertextového diskurzu, a tedy i našeho zkoumání.
