Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce je představit argumentaci amerického estetika Curtise Lloyda Cartera, týkající se vztahu umění, v jeho případě malby, a jazyka. Předestřít Carterovu myšlenku, že malba může mít syntaktická pravidla stejně jako jazyk, a že tvary, použité v jednotlivých malířských stylech v historickém "příběhu umění", se mohou chovat jako syntaktické prvky. Carterův koncept bude následně porovnáván s ustálenějšími teoriemi některých myslitelů, kteří se ve svých pracích pokoušeli nalézt sémantické vlastnosti umění a možné charakteristiky jeho "jazyka" - Susanne K. Langerovou, Nelsonem Goodmanem a Ernstem Gombrichem. Hlavním záměrem této práce bude podpořit některé z předložených konceptů vlastními závěry a představit malbu jako formu specifického jazyka, tj. vymezit ji jako odlišný, přesto stále ostatním jazykům příbuzný výtvor. Poukázat, za jakých podmínek by byl Carterův koncept malířství jako specifického jazyka, který vychází z předpokladu, že v malbě skutečně můžeme, podobně jako v jazyce, rozeznávat syntax, obhajitelný a případně, zda by bylo možné jej vztáhnout i na jiné druhy umění.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to introduce the argumentation of American aesthetician Curtis Lloyd Carter, concerning the relationship of art, more specifically painting, and language. It aims to introduce Carter's idea that painting can have syntactical rules as well as language does, and that the shapes used in individual painting styles during "the story of art" may behave as syntax elements. Carter's concept will then be compared to the more stable theories of some thinkers who attempted to find semantic features of art and the possible characteristics of its "language" - Susanne K. Langer, Nelson Goodman and Ernst Gombrich. The main aim of this work will be to support some of the presented concepts with my own conclusions and to present paintings as a form of a specific language, i.e. to define it as a distinct, yet related, product. To point out under what conditions the Carter's concept of painting as a specific language based on the assumption that in painting we can, in the same way as in language, recognise the syntax, would be defendable and if his concept could also be applicable to other types of art.
