Buňky vedlejší populace přitahují vědce svým, kmenovým buňkám podobným, fenotypem a také tím, jak snadné je jejich získání pomocí průtokové cytometrie. Tyto buňky se velmi liší svými vlastnostmi, v závislosi na tkáni z níž byly získány. V mnoha permanentních kulturách odvozených z nádorů je možno nalézt buňky vedlejší populace. Side population cells attract scientists with its stem-cell-like phenotype and the easiness of separation by flow cytometry. These cells vary in their properties according to the tissue from which they originate. It is possible to find side population cells in many permanent cell lines derived from carcinomas.
