Abstract:

Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl zjistit, co potřebují studenti ve věku 60+, kteří se začínají učit angličtinu jako cizí jazyk k tomu, aby byli úspěšní ve svém úsilí. Cílem výzkumu bylo najít odpovědi na následující otázky. Jaká je motivace a cíle starších studentů? Jaké jsou potřeby starších studentů z hlediska jazykových dovedností, gramatiky, výslovnosti, slovní zásoby, učebního prostředí, klimatu ve třídě, přístupu učitele, (sebe)reflexe a hodnocení, vyučovacích metod a přístupů? Výzkumný vzorek tvořilo sedm účastníků kurzu ve věku 60+ let, kteří jsou českými občany. Kvalitativní výzkum kombinoval dvě metody. Nejprve bylo od začátku kurzu prováděno pozorování učitelem. Pozorování přinesla terénní poznámky, které byly následně přeformulovány do výzkumných otázek. Zadruhé se uskutečnil rozhovor v ohniskové skupině. Výsledné transkripce byly otevřeně kódovány pomocí programu Atlas.ti. Z analýzy dat vzešel celý soubor doporučení. Patří mezi ně na míru ušitá poslechová cvičení, představování nové gramatiky po částech, postupné zavádění nového materiálu, využití cvičení na bázi drilu pro výslovnost, slovní zásobu a gramatiku nebo vytváření bezpečného prostředí pro hraní rolí v náročných situacích ze skutečného života. Zjištění nabízejí užitečná vodítka jak pro starší studenty, tak pro učitele angličtiny. Zároveň studie uznává potřebu dalšího výzkumu kvůli homogenitě vzorku a její omezené velikosti.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis aims to discover what beginner and elementary students aged 60+ who learn English as a foreign language need to be successful in their efforts. The objective of the research was to find answers to the following questions. What are the motivations and goals of elderly learners? What are the needs of elderly learners in terms of language skills, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, learning environment, classroom climate, teacher’s approach, (self-)reflection and evaluation, teaching methods and approaches? The research sample consisted of seven course participants who were Czech citizens 60+ years old. The qualitative research combined two methods. Firstly, class observation was performed since the beginning of the course by the class teacher. The observations brought forth field notes which were consequently reformulated into research questions. Secondly, a focus group interview was held. The resultant transcriptions were open coded using the Atlas.ti program. A whole set of recommendations emerged from the data analysis. These include tailored listening exercises, chunk-based grammar instruction, gradual introduction of new material, incorporation of drills for pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, or creating a safe environment for role-playing challenging real-life situations. While the findings offer useful guidance for both elderly learners and English teachers, the study acknowledges the need for further research due to the limited and homogeneous sample size.
