Consumption-driven Hedonism and the Quest of Happiness in an Affluent Society

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce přibližuje problematiku fenoménu štěstí na pozadí společnosti materiální hojnosti, sycené étosem konzumního hédonismu. V teoretické části nahlíží nejednoznačný a složitý diskurz štěstí interdisciplinární perspektivou (filozofickou, psychologickou, sociologickou a ekonomickou), vymezuje termíny „soudobá společnost“ a „hédonismus“ a prostřednictvím důkladné literární rešerše se snaží o pochopení faktorů, které majoritně formují podobu a intenzitu prožívaného štěstí u lidí žijících v soudobé společnosti. V praktické části se věnuje realizaci výzkumné sondy na téma lidského štěstí, kdy zkoumá faktory, které ke zvýšení míry životního štěstí a spokojenosti přispívají a porovnává zjištěná fakta s teoretickými poznatky. Cílem práce je zjistit, jaké konkrétní faktory míru štěstí v současné české společnosti ovlivňují, zda je možné dosáhnout trvalého štěstí pouhým uspokojování materiálních potřeb, jak často tvrdí reklama a jakým způsobem došlo k ovlivnění míry štěstí během pandemie Covidu-19. Praktický přínos práce spočívá v aplikaci zjištěných informací při plánování budoucích marketingových kampaní, jelikož právě průzkum trhu a zjištění potřeb potenciálních zákazníků jsou klíčovými nástroji pro plánování a budoucí úspěch reklamních kampaní.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis approaches the issue of the phenomenon of happiness against the background of a society of material abundance, pervaded by the ethos of consumer hedonism. The theoretical part looks at the ambiguous and complex discourse of happiness from an interdisciplinary perspective (philosophical, psychological, sociological, and economic), defines the terms "contemporary society" and "hedonism" and through thorough literary research seeks to understand the factors that predominantly shape the form and intensity of experienced happiness in people living in contemporary society. The practical part is focused on the implementation of a research probe on the topic of human happiness, where the factors that contribute to increasing human happiness and life satisfaction are examined and it compares the ascertained findings with theoretical knowledge. The aim of the thesis is to find out what specific factors in contemporary Czech society affect the level of happiness and if it is possible to achieve lasting happiness by mere satisfaction of material needs as is often claimed by advertising, and how experiencing happiness was affected during the Covid-19 pandemic. The practical benefit of this work lies in the application of the findings in the planning of marketing campaigns because market research and identifying the needs of potential customers are key tools to the planning process and to the future success of advertising campaigns.
