How Does It Feel to Be a Pilgrim: Social Interactions on Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o poutní cestě do Santiaga de Compostela a zaměřuje se na konkrétní zkušenosti poutníků, kteří tuto několikaset kilometrovou pěší cestu absolvují. Prostřednictvím etnografického výzkumu zaznamenává průběh cesty a vše, co je s ní spojeno. Důraz klade na vzájemnou dynamiku tělesné a sociální stránky cesty a na etnograficky ukotvenou (sebe)reflexi této dynamiky. Teoretickým východiskem jsou teze V. a E. Turnerových, které vnímají poutníky a poutnictví z antropologického hlediska jako dočasnou sociální skupinu, která sdílí liminální prvky - communitas. Toto východisko není přijímáno nekriticky. Naopak je v textu konfrontováno s konceptem contestation, který poutnictví zkoumá jako to, co je konstruováno různými diskursy soupeřícími v časoprostoru. Cílem práce je prozkoumat povahu pouti jako ne primárně náboženského jevu a odpovědět na otázku jejích (trans)formativních účinků na ty, kdo ji absolvují. Ambicí práce je také přispět k diskusi, nakolik je ještě dnes nosné nahlížet na pouť jako na iniciační rituál, zejména bereme-li v úvahu různé motivy, se kterými poutníci přicházejí.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and focuses on particular experiences of pilgrims who undertake this long, arduous journey. The journey and everything what is related with it is noted through ethnographic research. It emphasizes mutual dynamics of carnal and social aspects and ethnographically embedded (self)reflection of these dynamics. The main concept is based on Turners´ proposition which sees pilgrims and pilgrimage from anthropological perspective as temporal social unit that shares liminal elements - communitas. The proposition is not accepted uncritically. Contrariwise, it is confronted with the concept of contestation in the text. It studies pilgrimage as constructed by various discourses contesting in space-time. The aim of the thesis is to look into character of the journey as not primarily religious phenomena, if there are (trans)formative effects on those who undertakes the journey. Ambition of the thesis is to contribute to the discussion to what extent the journey can be seen as rite of passage, especially while we take into account motivations pilgrims come with.
