Arthur Schopenhauer's Philosophy of Will and its Influence on Samuel Beckett's Art

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vybranými literárními díly Samuela Becketta, ve kterých hledá vlivy Arthura Schopenhauera na základě jeho filozofických a estetických spisů. Za cíl si klade rozpoznat dosah vlivu Schopenhauerovy filozofie na Beckettovu tvorbu, prozkoumat míru, v jaké byl tímto filozofem inspirován a ovlivněn, a které konkrétní aspekty filozofie přejal a přetavil do vlastních děl, tedy které motivy jsou pro oba dva společné. Tyto otázky nakonec vedou k odpovědi na to, jakou roli sehrává Schopenhauerův vliv při interpretaci Beckettovy literatury. V práci přitom neusilujeme o to, prozkoumat danou problematiku celistvě se všemi Beckettovými díly a všemi aspekty Schopenhauerovy filozofie, nýbrž se zaměříme na některé statě, důležité pro rozpoznání zkoumaného vlivu.

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s thesis deals with selected literary works written by Samuel Beckett and influence of Arthur Schopenhauer on them. Research is based on his philosophical and aesthetic writings. Its aim is to recognize the impact of Schopenhauer’s philosophy on the works of S. Beckett, to examine the extent in which he was inspired and influenced by the philosopher and to find such aspects of the philosophy that Beckett used in his own works. Results of the investigation finally leads to the answer to the question what role Schopenhauer’s influence plays in interpretation of Beckett’s literature. However, our aim is not to examine the entire subject, all the works of Samuel Beckett nor all the aspects of Schopenhauer's philosophy. We will focus on the particular elements of their works, relevant for the recognition of the investigated influence.
