The influence of academic inbreeding on scientific productivity of teaching economists at Czech universities

Abstract:

Akademický inbreeding a jeho vliv na vědeckou produktivitu akademických pracovníků se stal velmi probíranou problematikou nejen v Evropě, ale i mimo ni. Doposud ovšem tento vztah nebyl zkoumán na území České republiky. Proto diplomová práce odhaluje vliv akademického inbreedingu na vědeckou produktivitu vyučujících ekonomických oborů pěti veřejných vysokých škol na našem území. Práce zkoumá akademický inbreeding z pohledu dosaženého magisterského i doktorského vzdělání. Pro sledování vědecké produktivity akademických pracovníků je použit Hirschův index, sledovaný jak za celou kariéru akademických pracovníků, tak i za posledních pět let. K odhalení, zda se od sebe navzájem liší výsledky Hirschova indexu mezi inbreedovanými a neinbreedovanými akademickými pracovníky je v diplomové práci použit Mann-Whitney test. Mann-Whitney test nepotvrdil, že by rozdělení Hirschova indexu inbreedovaných a neinbreedovaných akademických pracovníků bylo rozdílné. Následně práce zkoumá prostřednictvím Pearsonova chí-kvadrát testu závislost Hirschova indexu a akademického inbreedingu. Podle chí-kvadrát testu, jsou zkoumané veličiny nezávislé. Závěrem práce je použita metoda vícenásobné regrese k vysvětlení Hirschova indexu zkoumaných akademických pracovníků pomocí dalších proměnných. Výsledky vícenásobné regrese odhalují, že akademický inbreeding a délka kariéry akademických pracovníků nemají na Hirschův index akademických pracovníků statisticky významný vliv. Výsledky analýzy poukazují také na to, že muži mají vyšší Hirschův index než ženy a akademičtí pracovníci s více získanými tituly mají vyšší Hirschův index oproti těm, kteří mají titulů méně.

Abstract:

Academic inbreeding and its impact on productivity of academic staff has become a highly discussed issue, not only in Europe but also beyond. So far, however, this matter has not been studied in the Czech Republic. Therefore, the thesis reveals the influence of academic inbreeding on the scientific productivity of teachers of economic fields of five public universities in our country. The thesis examines academic inbreeding in terms of both master's and doctoral degrees. To monitor the academic productivity of academic staff the Hirsch Index is used and has been monitored throughout the career of academic staff as well as over the last five years. The diploma thesis uses Mann-Whitney test to find out if the results of Hirsch index differ for inbred and non-bred academic staff. The Mann-Whitney test did not confirm that the distribution of the Hirsch index of inbred and non-bred academic staff was different. Subsequently, the thesis examines the dependence of the Hirsch index and academic inbreeding by means of Pearson chi-square test. According to the chi-square test, the measured quantities are independent. Finally, the method of multiple regression is used to explain the Hirsch index of studied academic staff using other variables. The results of multiple regression reveal that academic inbreeding and career length of academic staff have no statistically significant effect on Hirsch's academic staff index. The results of the analysis also show that men have higher Hirsch index than women, and academics with more degrees have higher Hirsch index than those who have fewer degrees.
