Image of the USA in geography textbooks and Czech society awareness from the 19th century to the present

Abstract:

Práce podává hlubší pohled na obraz USA v učebnicích z posledních 140 let, vybrané texty jsou konfrontovány se stávající situací jak v USA, tak v českých zemích. Po diskusi literatury a popisu vybraných metod následuje popis stavu školství, obsahová analýza středoškolských učebnic a učebnic určených nižším typům škol (měšťanským, obecným, základním) a základní charakteristika významných autorů těchto textů. Práce se zabývá také postavením Čechů v Americe a významnými milníky v historii obou států, jež formovaly vzájemnou percepci společností. Prostor dostala rovněž komparace ikonického textu a shrnutí učebních plánů. Závěr přináší syntézu zjištěných informací a návrh dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

The thesis gives a deeper analysis of the image of the USA in textbooks from the last 140 years. The texts selected are confronted with the present situation both in the USA and Czechia. The discussion of literature and description of selected methods is followed by a description of the state of education, content analysis of secondary school textbooks and textbooks designed for lower types of schools (middle, general, elementary) and basic characteristics of important authors of these texts. The thesis also deals with the position of the Czechs in America and significant milestones in the history of both states, which had shaped the mutual perception of the societites. Space has also been given to the comparison of iconic text and summary of curricula. The conclusion brings a synthesis of the findings and a proposal for further research.
