Systems for Online Plagiarism Detection

Abstract:

Tato rigorózní práce se zabývá problémem plagiátorství a diskutuje nejrůznější systémy, které pomáhájí proti plagiátorství bojovat. Prvním krokem v komplexní detekci plagiátu je vyhledání podezřelých dokumentů, ze kterých mohlo být opisováno. Tyto dokumenty se pak typicky detailně porovnávají výpočetními metodami počítající podobnosti dokumentů. Rigorózní práce se zaměřuje hlavně na fázi vyhledání podezřelých dokumentů z online zdrojů jako je Web. Navrhuje metodiku, která byla ověřena v praxi a též na mezinárodní soutěži v detekci plagiátorství, kde si vedla nejlépe ze všech účastníků. Práce představuje několik nových poznatků v této problematice.

Abstract:

Plagiarism has become serious problem mainly because of the electronically available documents. Educational institution such as universities and colleges should have methods to prevent the plagiarism from happening. This thesis discusses several commercial and academic systems for plagiarism detection. The first step in plagiarism detection may be the retrieval of candidate documents from huge corpus, which is in real scenario the Web, for further detailed comparison. This thesis introduces a new methodology of candidate document retrieval together with the background of this task. Based on this methodology we developed candidate document retrieval system which enhances existing anti-plagiarism tool incorporated in the Information System of Masaryk University. We used similar methodology for creating a competing system in the PAN 2012 competition on plagiarism detection. Our candidate retrieval system was based on extraction of three different types of Web queries with narrowing their execution by skipping certain passages of an input document. We discovered that key-words based queries are the most promising and the headers based queries do not pay off in the overall performance.
