Cultural Co-optation: Commodifying the Hippie Movement and Appropriating Feminist Ideologies

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá fenomén kulturní kooptace prostřednictvím dvou případových studií: komodifikace hippie kultury a přetvořením hnutí Riot Grrrl a jeho feminismu. Prostřednictvím teorie Dicka Hebdige, který dělí kooptaci na komoditní a ideologickou, tato práce názorně ukazuje, jak mohou být kulturní hnutí manipulována dominantními silami pro své vlastní účely. Zkoumáním různých způsobů, jakými byla tato hnutí komercializována a domestikována, tato práce nabízí kritickou analýzu toho, jak je kulturní vzdor často ze strany dominantní společnosti přeměněn ve spotřební zboží.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the phenomenon of cultural co-optation through two case studies: the commodification of the hippie movement and the appropriation of the Riot movement Grrrl and its feminism. Through a framework informed by Dick Hebdige's concepts of Commodity and Ideological co-optation, this thesis demonstrates how countercultural movements can be manipulated by dominant forces for their own purposes. By examining the various ways in which these movements have been commodified and domesticated, this thesis offers a critical analysis of how cultural resistance is often turned into a commodity by mainstream society.
