Two Czech translations of Jack Kerouac's On the Road: a study on translating “written orality” in first-person narrative

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce srovnává dva české překlady Kerouakova románu Na cestě z hlediska úrovně jejich spisovnosti či nespisovnosti. On the Road je příkladem vyprávění v ich formě, které se vyznačuje tím, že všechny promluvy, z nichž se skládá, jsou do určité míry nápodobou mluvené řeči. Překlad tohoto typu literárního díla je obecně spojen s problémy, které plynou ze střetu mluvenosti a psanosti ve vyprávění v ich formě. Překlad tohoto typu textu z angličtiny do češtiny s sebou však nese i další úskalí, jejichž zdrojem je jednak skutečnost, že míra spisovnosti či nespisovnosti je v angličtině a češtině signalizována pomocí odlišných prostředků, a jednak to, že čeština disponuje větším počtem stylistických vrstev než angličtina. Cílem první části této diplomové práce bylo vysvětlit všechny výše zmíněné problémy z teoretického hlediska, zatímco druhá část zkoumá, jakým způsobem se s problémem „psané mluvenosti“ vypořádali dva překladatelé románu On the Road, tedy Jiří Josek a Jiří Popel. Vzhledem k tomu, že překlad musí být vždy analyzován a hodnocen ve vztahu k výchozímu textu, bylo třeba nejdříve určit hlavní stylistické znaky a tendence anglické verze On the Road. Nejdůležitější distinktivní rysy obou překladů z hlediska úrovně jejich spisovnosti byly poté zjišťovány pomocí kvantitativní morfologicko-fonologické a lexikální analýzy a následně popsány a interpretovány jak ve vztahu k výchozímu textu, tak s ohledem na dobu vzniku obou překladů. Je totiž třeba brát v úvahu, že Joskův a Popelův překlad od sebe dělí téměř třicet let, během nichž se obecné vnímání toho, co je spisovné a co je nespisovné, podstatným způsobem proměnilo.

Abstract:

This thesis compares two Czech translations of Jack Kerouacʼs novel On the Road with the focus on the level of their standardness/substandardness. On the Road represents first-person narrative and as such it is informed by various types of discourse, all of which are, to a certain extent, an imitation of speech. The process of translating this type of literary work generally involves difficulties, which stem from the clash between orality and literacy in first-person narrative. However, if this type of fiction is to be translated from English to Czech, it entails additional rigours, which result firstly from the fact that the level of informality of the text is signaled in a different way in English than in Czech and secondly from the higher number of stylistic layers in Czech. The first part of this thesis aims to explain all these issues theoretically, while the second part explores how the problem of “written orality” is treated in two different translations of On the Road, that is in the translation of Jiří Josek and Jiří Popel. As the translation can only be analyzed and evaluated in relation to the source text, the primary stylistic features and tendencies in the English version of On the Road are identified prior to analysis of the target texts. The key distinctive elements of the two translations in terms of their level of informality are then being revealed by means of quantitative morphologically-phonological and lexical analysis and subsequently described and interpreted both in relation to the source text and to the time of their origin, since we have to be aware of the fact that there was an almost 30-year gap between the publishing of the two translations and the general perception of what is standard and substandard changed substantially in the interim.
