Pojetí nízké a vysoké kultury v seriálu Hannibal

This Master's thesis sets out to describe the treatment of the concepts of low and high culture in the tv series Hannibal (2013-2015). The theoretical part of the thesis will contain a basic definition of these two concepts, while pointing out their artificially costructed nature, and also a summary of the literature on the topic. The analytical part will then describe the occurence of the low and high culture in the series, set apart the elements belonging to either category, and evaluate which category the series itself falls into, considering its genre, quality tv status, and its form of a tv series. Futhermore, attention will be paid to if and how do the concepts of low and high culture help with characterisation, and whether the series itself points out that the concepts are only a construct. I will take into consideration the amount of intertextual links in the show, be it links to other films or classical works of art, as well as the high stylization and violence of the series.

Anotace:

Cílem této magisterské práce je provedení analýzy výskytu, působení, a způsobu nakládání s koncepty nízké a vysoké kultury v televizním seriálu Hannibal, a to jak v rámci fikčního světa, tak i s ohledem na statut seriálu samotného. Vycházím přitom z estetického a sociologického přístupu k nízké a vysoké kultuře, a v rámci popisu společenského přesahu kulturní konzumace uplatňuji teorie Pierra Bourdieu o ekonomickém, sociálním a kulturním kapitálu. Provádím sumarizaci hlavních teoretiků a kritérií, podle nichž byly kultury rozlišovány, a na základě tohoto teoretického rámce seriál analyzuji. Blíže se zabývám vybranými prvky (jmenovitě žánr, násilí, umění a autorství) a jejich asociací s nízkou a vysokou kulturou, a společenským rozměrem obou kultur ve vztahu k postavám a způsobům konzumace. Ke konceptu nízké a vysoké kultury přistupuji kriticky, s povědomím o jeho kontroverznosti, revizi, kterou novější odborné texty provádějí, a hodnotícímu zabarvení, jež výrazy "nízká kultura" a "vysoká kultura" nesou.

Abstract:

The aim of this Master's thesis is to carry out an analysis of the effect, occurrence and treatment of the concepts of low and high culture in the TV series Hannibal, both in the realm of its fictional world, and the status of the series itself. Aesthetic and sociological approaches to low and high culture are applied, as well as Pierre Bourdieu's theory of economic, social and cultural capital. A summary of main theorists and the criteria used to distinguish the cultures is given, and the analysis of the TV series is based on this theoretical framework. I closely focus on selected elements (namely genre, violence, art and authorship) and their association with low and high culture, and the social aspect of both cultures in relation to characters and manners of consumption. I approach the concept of low and high culture critically, with knowledge of its controversy, revision that has been done by newer academic texts, and the evaluative connotations that the expressions "low culture" and "high culture" carry.
