Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce nazvaná The Reaction of the American Muslim Community to the Terrorist Attacks of 9/11 zkoumá na pozadí muslimské menšiny ve Spojených státech, potažmo americké společnosti, jaký je na počátku 21. století vztah mezi Západní civilizací a muslimským světem. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl zasadit události a jevy moderní doby do historického kontextu, a tak poskytnout perspektivu, která umožní vnímat realitu domnělého konfliktu v průběhu času. První část poskytuje dějinné shrnutí vztahu křesťanské Evropy, později sekulární Západní civilizace a islámského světa. Druhá část shrnuje historii a současnost následovníků Islámu na severoamerickém kontinentě, zejména pak osud této menšiny po útocích na New York a Washington v roce 2001. Třetí část pak předkládá příčiny a následky konfliktů a nedorozumění, které společně určovaly a stále určují podobu vztahu mezi danými dvěma kulturami.

Abstract:

This Diploma Thesis called “The Reaction of the American Muslim Community to the Terrorist Attacks of 9/11“ on the background of the Muslim minority in the United States, in extension of the American society, examines what the relationship between the Western civilization and the Muslim world is like at the beginning of the 21st century. This Diploma Thesis aims to put events and phenomena of the modern times into the historical context, thus to provide a perspective which allows to see the reality of the alleged conflict over the passing of time. The first part provides a historical summary of the relationship of Christian Europe, later secular western civilization, and the Islamic world. The second part summarizes the history and presence of followers of Islam on the North American continent, particularly the lot of the minority after the attacks on New York and Washington in 2001. The third part subsequently presents causes and consequences of conflicts and misunderstandings that have defined the character of the relationship between the two cultures.
