Archetypal analysis of variations of the antagonist in the animated fairy tale Shrek

Abstract:

V tejto práci som sa zamerala na archetypálnu analýzu postáv z filmov Shrek a Shrek 2. Konkrétne ide o Shreka a jeho premenu zo zápornej na kladnú postavu, a záporné postavy Lorda Farquaada a Dobrej víly. Analýza sa zaoberala archetypom vo vzťahu k antagonistom, a ich interakcií v kontexte subverzívne rozprávkového narativu franšízy Shrek. Cieľom bolo poukázať na rozdielne a podobné črty týchto postáv a rozobrať ich vymedzenie z daných archetypov. Postavy boli analyzované za pomoci teórie Carla Gustava Junga, ktorý skúma a rozoberá rysy archetypálnych konceptov týchto postáv v tradičnej rozprávkovej literatúre. Zistila som, že postava Shreka sa premieňa z postavy zápornej na kladnú, Dobrá víly sa premieňa z kladnej postavy na zápornú. Lord Farquaad ostáva jednotný a teda je antagonistom počas celej prvej časti Franšízy. V práci som bola schopná určiť, že tieto postavy disponujú najmä archetypom hrdinu, matky a vládcu.

Abstract:

This thesis focus on the archetypal analysis of characters from the films Shrek and Shrek 2. Specifically, it deals with Shrek and his transformation from a negative character to a positive one, and the negative characters of Lord Farquaad and the Good Fairy. The analysis addressed the archetype concerning antagonists and their interactions in the context of the subversive fairy tale narrative of the Shrek franchise. The aim was to point out the different and similar features of these characters and to analyze their definition from the given archetypes. The character analysis was based on the theory of Carl Gustav Jung, who examines and analyses the features of the archetypal concepts of these characters in traditional fairy tale literature. It was found that Shrek's character changes from a negative to a positive character, and the Good Fairy transforms from a positive to a negative character. Lord Farquaad remains united and thus is an antagonist throughout the first part of the Franchise. This thesis determined that these characters have the archetype of the hero, mother and ruler.
