Female frequency in populations of gynodioecious species Cirsium oleraceum (Asteraceae)

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou frekvence samic v populacích gynodioecického druhu Cirsium oleraceum a biotickým i abiotickým faktorům, které ji ovlivňují (gynodioecie = pohlavní dimorfismus: samice + hermafroditi). Dále jsem zjišťovala, zda je rozdíl v plodnosti a v míře napadení hmyzími herbivory mezi samicemi a hermafrodity. Na základě prostudované literatury jsem předpokládala, že frekvence samic v drsnějších podmínkách poroste, protože by měly být vůči nim odolnější než hermafroditi. Výsledky neukázaly vztah mezi frekvencí samic a průměrnými ročními teplotami či průměrnými ročními úhrny srážek na lokalitách. Pouze v případě nadmořských výšek výsledky naznačují, že jsou frekvence samic vyšší v nadmořských výškách, které již leží pod nebo nad distribučním optimem studovaného druhu, tj. mimo interval 300 – 400 metrů nad mořem. Pozitivní korelace byla nalezena mezi frekvencí samic a sezónností srážek. Z předchozích výzkumů vyplývá, že jsou samice plodnější než hermafroditi a v souladu s tím jsem zjistila, že samice tvoří průměrně na úbor více nažek a jejich nažky jsou také těžší než nažky hermafroditů, a to i přesto, že v době květu jsou samičí úbory menší (lehčí) než úbory hermafroditů. Výhoda samic (female advantage), která by měla samicím vyvážit ztrátu jejich samčí funkce, byla potvrzena pro průměrný počet vykvetlých úborů na rostlinu, průměrný počet nažek na úbor a průměrnou hmotnost nažky a byla nalezena pozitivní korelace mezi celkovou výhodou samic a jejich frekvencí na lokalitách. Předpokládá se také, že samice bývají méně často napadány hmyzími herbivory a tímto napadením také méně trpí. V rozporu s tímto jsem však zjistila, že samičí květenství obsahují průměrně více hmyzích herbivorů než hermafroditní.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis analyzes female frequency in populations of gynodioecious species Cirsium oleraceum and factors, biotic and abiotic, determining this frequency (gynodioecy = sexual dimorphism: females + hermaphrodites). In addition, I investigated whether there is a difference in fertility and in the rate of infestation by insect herbivores between females and hermaphrodites. Based on the literature I assumed that the female frequency will be higher in harsher conditions because females should be more resistant against them than hermaphrodites. The results showed no relationship between the annual average temperature or the average annual precipitation sum and female frequency on the localities. It seems that the female frequency is higher in the altitudes outside of the distributional optimum, i.e., outside of 300 – 400 meters above sea level. The positive correlation was found between female frequency and seasonality of precipitation. Previous research shows that the females are more fertile than the hermaphrodites and in accordance with this I out found that females produce more achenes per inflorescence and their achenes are heavier despite the lower size (weitht) of female blossoming inflorescences compared to hermaphrodites. Female advantage which should compensate females´ loss of male function was found for the average number of inflorescences per plant, average number of achenes per inflorescence and average achene weight. Positive correlation between total female advantage and female frequency was found. It is assumed that females are less often attacked by insect herbivores and the attack is less damaging for them. Contrary I found that females´ inflorescences contain more insect herbivores than those of hermaphrodites.
