Teachers' creativity in teaching English grammar

Abstract:

Kreativita je důležitá při vyučování anglického jazyka, jelikož učitelé slouží jako model chování a mohou ovlivňovat vývoj kreativního potenciálu u studentů. Je proto stěžejní zjistit, jak je kreativita učitelů reflektována ve výběru jejich aktivit. Tato bakalářská práce je zaměřena na obecné vnímaní kreativity u učitelů a na různé aktivity, které učitelé považují za kreativní a používají je při výuce gramatiky anglického jazyka. Do výzkumu byly zahrnuty tři učitelky angličtiny, které poskytly interview a příklady kreativních aktivit. Aktivity byly pak kategorizovány podle rozličných charakteristik, například zaměření na část jazyka, integrace dovedností, styl učení, typ produkce a jiné. Výsledky ukázali, že učitelé si vysoko cení kreativitu. Gramatiku považují za složitou na vyučování a je podle nich obtížné učit ji kreativně. Většinou dotázaní učitelé vybírají aktivity podobné hrám, často zaměřené na přesnost, omezený výstup a rozvíjející sice jenom jednu z jazykových dovedností, avšak studenti se při nich setkávají s různými styly učení. Tato práce může posloužit jako vhled do vnímaní kreativity učiteli a do kreativních aktivit používaných během výuky anglické gramatiky.

Abstract:

Creativity is important in the ELT setting, as teachers serve as the model of behaviour and can influence the learners‘ development of creative potential. It is then crucial to study how teachers’ creativity is reflected in their choice of activities. This bachelor thesis focuses on presenting teachers’ general perceptions about creativity as well as various activities they consider creative and use while teaching English grammar. Three English language teachers were included in the study, each one providing answers in the questionnaire and examples of creative activities. The activities were categorized according to different characteristics, for example language focus, skills integration, learning style, type of output and others. The results showed that the teachers highly value creativity and consider grammar to be both difficult to teach and to be creative in. In terms of creative activities, the teachers tend to choose activities similar to games, often focused on accuracy, restricted output, developing just one language skill, but engaging students with different learning styles. This work could serve as an insight into teachers’ perceptions about creativity and creative activities they use during teaching English grammar.
