Re-orientalism as a Writing Strategy: Generational Gaps or Cultural Differences in Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake and Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se věnuje způsobům, jakými vybrané autorky využívají ve svých textech orientalizmus jako narativní strategii. Teorie re-orientalizmu vychází z toho, že někteří autoři pocházející z diasporické komunity zobrazují vlastní etnicitu skrze stereotypy, které o konkrétní kultuře převládají v západním světě. Práce se ve své analytické části zaměřuje na dvě díla - román The Namesake (2003) od indicko-americké autorky Jhumpy Lahiri a dílo The Joy Luck Club (1989) od čínsko-americké autorky Amy Tan. Témata obou autorek odrážejí nejen dobu, ve které spisovatelky žijí, ale také jejich etnický původ. Diasporické komunity a imigranti ovlivněni liberalizací imigrantské politiky v USA v šedesátých letech už nejsou sociálně znevýhodněnými skupinami zobrazovanými v zápasu o přežití. Protože autorky opisují zejména každodenní život postav, nevyhýbají se ani konfliktům mezi rodiči a jejich dětmi. Z daných námětů autorky těží odlišně. Zatímco Lahiri zobrazuje vazby a problémy mezi rodiči a jejich dětmi jako univerzální konflikt dvou generací, Tan poukazuje na to, že spory imigrantů a jejich potomků se odvíjí i od dalších příčin. Aby zdůraznila kulturní pozadí rodinných rozporů, Tan vykresluje matky čínského původu prostřednictvím etnických stereotypů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore how two second generation immigrant writers – Jhumpa Lahiri and Amy Tan – employ orientalism as a narrative strategy in their writing. The theory of re-orientalism derives from the fact that diasporic writers may perceive their ethnic community through the Western stereotypes. The textual analysis focuses on two novels – The Namesake (2003) by Indian American author Jhumpa Lahiri and The Joy Luck Club (1989) by Chinese American writer Amy Tan. The themes of the two novels reflect not only the era in which the two writers live, but also their ethnic background. Diasporic communities and immigrants influenced by the liberalization of American immigration policy in 1960s are no longer socially disadvantaged groups portrayed as struggling to survive. Since the two authors depict the everyday realities of the characters, they also pay attention to conflicts between parents and their children. However, they represent the conflicts differently. Whereas Lahiri portrays the clashes between parents and their children as universal disputes between the two generations, Tan suggests that the disagreement between immigrants and their children has also other origins. In order to stress the cultural differences as the source of the clashes, Tan describes the Chinese immigrant mothers through the ethnic stereotypes.
